Jabber the Jackdaw! Empty Jabber the Jackdaw!

Post by Amber Tue May 20, 2014 8:00 pm

I rescued Jabber last year, after I found 2 Crows pecking him and trying to kill him!  sad  He was too young to have left the nest, but wasn't far off.  The Crows had badly injured one of his wings, and it was really swollen and red, they had pecked skin off the top of his head.  After antibiotics and hand rearing, he was fine, but badly imprinted on me.  Martin built an aviary for him, and he's been here ever since.  He also says 'hello'.  I love Jabber to bits!  xxx

This was Jabber in the early days.

Thank you, I really love Corvids, they're so intelligent. I've rescued Rooks and Jackdaws before, not had a Crow or Magpie yet. The ones I've had before have recovered and been released. Jabber is the only one who has really imprinted, as the others were a bit older. It's not ideal, but he's so close to me, that I'm not sure he would survive if I released him. sad xxx

No, probably not. I think there's a fine line between releasing a bird to the wild, and releasing it to certain death. If a wild thing has imprinted on a human, it will rarely survive in the wild.

Yeah that's what I thought. I do get upset that he gets excited when other Jackdaws come down to feed. We made the aviary fairly long, but it's nowhere near the same as freedom. I would die with worry though. There is a man just down the road who traps Corvids in a Larsen trap as well. Makes me livid. I released a poor Magpie that I saw in it once, poor thing was going mental in it! sad

I just don't understand why. sad  I've never understood the need to trap and kill animals, other than for food. dunno

If he's so keen on investing his time into building traps for wild birds, why can't he build appropriate enclosures for his tame ones to prevent predation? Typical!
