Snails

Post by Wendy on Sat May 24, 2014 9:37 pm

I'm having a big problem with Gus and the garden. He has become obsessed with crunching snails. Luckily for us, we don't yet have Lungworm in Northumberland. I am having to go into the garden every day and search for snails to kill. I pick them up and smash them under a plant pot, then they dry to dust.

I don't honestly know whether snails carry lungworm or not, but slugs can.

I'm guessing that it's the crunchiness of snails that has got Gus obsessed with them. I've known a couple of people whose dogs were similarly enamoured of slugs and chewed them "like chewing gum"  sick

Our last winter has been mild and wet and so these beasties are abounding. For the sake of your garden keep up your patrol, and to be on the safe side make sure that Gus is protected from lungworm.

Yuck!

I think the best thing to do would be to keep a constant eye on him so that, when he attempts to grab a snail, you can issue a Leave command.

How is his Leave command, by the way?

Dempsey used to crunch snails as well, but the last couple of years he's stopped. Snails and slugs can carry lungworm, but not all areas are affected as yet. Let's hope it doesn't spread!

All I can suggest is a strong 'leave' plus a regular round up of shelled culprits!
