That's a great article (and I loved the JRT in the photos.) I believe the food industry on the whole is really bad and not just for pet food. We can't even buy packets of seeds of particular vegetable species now because the multinationals and global governments want us to buy genetically modified foodstuffs and build a dependence on it and it is all to do with the movement of money across borders and into particular pockets.

I like the Bertolt Brecht quote: 'War is so expensive we believe trade is a better avenue to plunder'.

I feed a South African produced Ostrich kibble, that is fabulous in my opinion but my vet gets a heart attack every time she's reminded of what I feed. She says I should rather feed Pedigree than Montego.

My dogs are all healthy, strong, with beautiful coats and no skin or digestive issues.
Xan has won about 5/6 best condition prizes at fun shows hosted by Hills and Royal Canin.
I detest Hills.

If ostrich kibble is the same as Montego, I personally wouldn't feed it. The first named ingredient is cereal, plus it names cereals again later on. The meat is dirivatives as well, so not good quality. But i've seen worse.

That's a very interesting article Caryll, thank you.

You'll probably remember that I fed my Dobies on Bakers and thought it was the bees knees. In fact I fed it to my in-laws' dog (a fairly elderly impossible-to-fathom-what-was-in-her mongrel) when I looked after her for a fortnight whilst they were on holiday, and I've got to say she perked up no end - shinier coat and more energy, which even they noticed but they reverted to their cheapo tinned stuff when they got her back.

I've got admit that I never read the list of ingredients and if it wasn't for the fact that Kuchar refused to eat it and I asked the advice of you guys (at another place, 2 years ago!) he'd probably be on it still  sad

I've been to their factory twice. I've seen what they put in. Derivatives doesn't always equate bad. It means pulped carcass, they can't list each and every little thing.

No, I understand that, and I'm not criticizing, just saying I wouldn't use it. I won't use any feed that has cereals named as a first ingredient.

We don't have as many food options as you guys have. If you go to the vet you can choose between Hills, Royal Canin and Eukanuba if you're lucky. The other option in supermarket grade food like bakers and pedigree.
I wish we had some of your brands.

It's a shame that vets always go for those brands - in the UK as well.

Ours get imported from there and is incredibly expensive. I had Axel on the GSD Royal Canin and it's R712.00 for 12kgs.

Good article. I used Bakers when i first got Millie until i read about how bad it was. My two are fed Lathams just now but I'm thinking of switching to Wainrights. They already get a little bit of the Wainrights trays mixed into their food.

Since Kuchar turned his nose up at Bakers (and in fact any kibble) I tried him on Wainwrights trays and apart from a few stumbles when he was discombobulated in himself, he seems fine on it.

Millie can be fussy so I got the trays to mix in with her kibble (about a tablespoon) and she loved it.
