As you all know I've had a baby 9 weeks ago.

The last three weeks mylo has been shedding his winter coat.
My other half has gained an allergy to him from this. Which we just blew over and he's been taking the anti allergy tablet thingys.

But our little mister man. Has also developed an allergy to him, he's got this awful rash everytime he's around mylo.

Any suggestions on what we can do?

I don't want to have to find mylo a new home as we'd be lost without him

Thank you

Shame, that can't be nice.
Could you elaborate a bit about how the rash on baby starts? Does he come into contact with Milo and then it happens or just if they're together in tge same room? Where is the rash?

I don't think it's the shedding coat. Usually with a pet allergy it's spit or dandruff that causes it. You can start off by giving Milo a really good brushing 2/3 times a day. I have a Furminator and it is beyond fantastic for removing loose hair. It works on my long coat shepherd and short coat staffy.
After brushing take a wet microfibre cloth and wipe Milo down.
See if that helps to start with.
You'll also have to keep your house vacuumed exeptionally well for the next month or 2.

The doctor has confirmed it's an allergy to the dogs fur.

We already brush him three times a day lol. And believe you me, we Hoover stupid amounts a day because of the fur everywhere. But the baby is always upstairs when we Hoover.

It flares up when they're in the same room, if mylos watching him, literally as soon as he's in a close radius of him it gets awful.

We don't know whether to buy an outdoor kennel for him so he can be under our canopy no matter what the weather or what... We know that if we do that he's going to whine a lot because he's so protective over Joseff. Since he's been born, mylo will leg it outside do his business. Come straight back in and sit next to the baby again. He hates leaving his side or hates him being out of sight

Just don't know what we can do

I used to be hyper allergic to cats. If I walked into a house with cats I'd start sneezing and my eyes would swell up I then decided I wanted a cat and after 6 months of chronic antihistamines I got over the worst of my allergy. I now get a bit sneezy with strange cats but have no reaction from mine.
You might try waiting it out, if it's not to intrusive.

Usually a rash is from contact or ingestion of a substance. ..?
Have you been to a skin specialist with your baby? A normal gp can't tell you what is causing the actual allergy. You need blood tests for that. They usually just take the most obvious thing and blame that.
I get a reaction from my dogs if they've run through flowers from pollen.
I'm stumped. Just thinking of things you could try.
You might have no option but to rehome in the end, **** as that thought is.
Hopefully someone has better ideas.

Oh dear.

I'd rather not wait it out as he's only 9 weeks old. And being uncomfortable isn't fun for anyone let alone a baby.

Yeah, I've had all the blood tests and everything.
Stayed away from all dogs with him for a week. Rash went. Brought mylo to where I was staying. Rash came back.

Just so clueless sad it's not mylos fault and would feel awful having to rehome him

I've been reading a bit on Internet and most say take your baby to a allergy specialist to find the cause - saliva, urine, feces, dander, pollen, dust mites, mold can all stick to the fur and be transferred.

Seems you might not have a choice. Keeping the dog outside permanently is also not fair.
What an awful situation!

See if you can't find a Furminator. They're a bit pricey but the amount of loose hair they remove is astounding. Xan my staffy has very short and not a lot of hair, even on him I rake off loads of loose hair.
The medium is a nice size.

We already have one - his fur is malting that much you'll brush him stupid amounts of hair comes away and with minutes there's this mass of loose hair there again.

He's a husky cross a collie. But has the coat of a husky

Hi Shawnee - so sorry to hear you're having problems with this! sad

I think it may be better to have an outdoor kennel, just while he's shedding. He might not like it at first, but dogs will often settle down after the first couple of days. If he settles in well to outdoor kennels, you could also consider making this permanent or semi-permanent, as outdoor dogs will usually shed less than indoor dogs!

Thorough vacuuming should also help, as well as the continuation of regular brushing. Also, do you brush him indoors or outdoors? Brushing him outdoors should help a lot, so that the shed hair doesn't accumulate in the house.

You could also try speaking to a canine nutritionalist about Mylo's diet, as this can have a huge impact on shedding. happy Foods rich in Omega 3 and 6 oils are excellent for skin and coat health, so you could try that!

Yes outside we brush him.

Ahh, I think I may try it and put up with his whining for a few days -

Oo I didn't know their food had something to do with his coat? I'll chat to the nutritionist at the place I get his food tomorrow happy!

Would you say a plastic or wooden kennel would be better?

We Hoover and brush excessively already happy

Hope the nutritionist can help you!

Plastic is more durable than wood and is usually better insulated as well, so I'd go for that! happy

Also, something I forgot to mention! I don't know if this is something that would be affordable or practical for you, but investing in a powerful dog blow dryer can really help to get rid of the bulk of the shed fur! Usually, people will groom the dog first, then bathe him, then blow dry, followed by another quick groom afterwards. It doesn't stop the shedding completely, but it gets rid of most of the dead hairs that get stuck underneath. happy

Mylo thinks blowing air at him is a game haha! It may be good but the bugger would never stay still for it. He sits In front of me when I'm dying my hair nudging me until I blow him in the face, runs away and comes back for more lol. It would probably help him but it would take forever to get him dry lol.

Okie dokie I shall hunt eBay later happy thank you xx

Bless him! happy Would it help if you had somebody else hold him still? Or would that just make him more playful? tongue

Failing that, maybe a trip to a groomer? They have special apparatus to help keep a dog still.

Good luck! happy

I can only agree with what Eleanor has said.

The only other things I can add are

1. You can get anti-allergy wipes for dogs from the larger pet stores. I don't know how good they are, though.
2. If you can run to it, get a vacuum cleaner that is specifically good at removing dog hairs - some of them actually boast 99% removal! An ordinary vacuum cleaner only gets rid of about 70% of hair - the rest blows out of the other end!

Good luck.

P.S. Have you asked your doctor if there are any antihistamines that are safe for a young baby?

We've just ordered an outdoor kennel £65 for an xxl plastic dog kennel from eBay happy!

He has to be 12 weeks but he doesn't want to give him then even then as some babies get a bad reaction to them!

He's been outside under our canopy for two hours and he's has his front paws on the window ledge staring in bless him!

We have seen a dog grooming bit that goes on the end of out stain lol! We may pick it up but again, he maniac sees the Hoover as a game sad!

If you haven't guessed, mylo is madder than the mad hatter. I don't think he'll ever grow out of his puppy nutty ways! Good thing he doesn't gnaw everything! Just steals tea towels and cuddles them haha! Daft dog

I can understand why the doctor doesn't want to prescribe the antihistamines, if there's the potential for reactions. I suppose the plus side is that Mylo will only have heavy sheds twice per year, so you can plan in advance!

Poor thing. It's probably a bit strange for him at the moment, but he should settle down! happy

The dog grooming attachment is worth a try! happy Might take a bit of training to get him to stay still, but it'd be worth it in the end!

He sounds like such a lovely dog love Huskies are very well known for their crazy puppy stages, so mixed with a Border Collie, I'm not surprised he's a bit nutty! laughing I'm sure he'll start to settle down eventually though!

Yes lol! Calender mark it lol

Yes, it probably is. But thankfully he's quite adaptive. So he should get used to it rather quickly.

Awh he's mental haha! We don't mind it too much as he knows when enough is enough.

We bought him this giant rawhide from pets at home. The lunatic tried running through the kitchen door with the thing. Needless to say the plonker bounced backwards haha.

Our niece (she's two) calls him "my horsey" - he gallops more than runs. And let's then ride him when he's army crawling on the floor haha. He's so comical!

I bet he'll be a real trooper about it! happy

That's the important thing, that he knows his and your limits!

laughing Bless him, the daft brush!

On the subject of rawhide, just a heads up happy - when chunks are ripped off, it can swell to over twice the size in the stomach and cause problems. Very often, rawhide is also treated with icky chemicals during the manufacturing process.

laughing Sounds like he'll be an amazing big brother to grow up with!

Oh he will be! He's just totally mental on his own and with Anthony and I but stupidly calm when around children! He's just a teddy bear that loves being climbed and have his ears and tailed yanked haha.

Oh my!! I didn't know that! That's awful! I'll take it off him! He has a sensitive belly already! Don't want to make him worse! Thank you for telling me that Eleanor!
