That said, what breed would you recommend for a first time dog owner:

I usually recommend a staffy. Of course I am biased towards them but they're generally such softies and can take the punishment kids sometimes give dogs.

I always recommend staffies for first time dog owners, but NEVER american bulldogs, they are far from an easy breed even if you get one without behavioural problems

Staffords are a good first time breed, but only if the new owner is prepared to do some research on the breed and seek advice from others.

Staffords are great family dogs & generally easy enough to train, but they can be da, they're incredibly strong for their size and are often very stubborn!

I've only ever had GSDs (and a GSD x Collie), so I don't know what I'd advise for a first timer - probably not the baptism of fire I had with my cross!!!

That's an interesting list - thanks Shisa. I also looked at the list for best-for-newbies, and it amused me that many of the dogs in the not-for lists were criticised for shedding, whilst some of the dogs in the best-for list are just as bad!

I'd generally agree that yellow Labradors and Golden Retrievers are good starter dogs for newbies (providing they can bear the shedding !).

My first as a newbie dog-owner was a Dobermann. Although they can be stubborn, and will sound off about anything and everything (much like the toy dogs recommended in the best-for list) I think they're a good starter dog. I also agree that Staffies would be a good starter dog, providing that the newbie can cope with the boisterousness and strength for size ratio.

A couple I knew way back got a Weimeraner (on the not-for list) as newbies, and the last I heard had had no problems (apart from her tearing a hole in a mattress as a puppy, and what puppy wouldn't?!)

Research, research, research is vital for any first -time dog owners, no matter what the breed.

Hmmmm!  thinking My 1st dog was a rottie!
I agree with most of the list but... Dalmatians?
I don't think one breed is "better" as a 1st dog than another. I think the humans attitude,  time restraints, preparedness to spend their time to match the dogs needs, their willingness to train &socialize properly, etc. Many factors come in to play.

And staffies..... mine is a bigger handfull than my jessup.

Perhaps a cavalier king charles is a good 1st dog? dog beautifully natured, mum had one... Harry. Couldn't bite anything, he may lick you till you drown though?  wink  sat if you looked in his direction & training took no time at all. Once he did what you asked..... arhhhhh, I just have a sleep now.... see ya!

Best for newbies list... some of them will attack twice as fast as the dogs on the "not for newbies". In my opinion... most little dogs have more "fight" in them than their larger counterparts. They just don't inflict the same damage as a larger breed with a bite.

I think that's a big part of the problem; people look at the size and think smaller dogs are easier. Look at Jack Russells and Parsons! Very small dogs, but with enough fight for a lion!

We had a foxie, since the day I remember being alive, "peppy" he took on a truck to bite the tyres! Ran over his snout & broke it. He survived & lived till 14. I will never forget him!!! Top dog! Named as his "kennel" was an old pepsi cola wooden crate that they used to deliver to our door, lined with carpet from leftovers from a job dad did. I hated the dog when dad bought him home.... I had been bitten by a cat a few days before & "this thing had whiskers" its a cat! Once it barked..... I think I nearly hugged it into asphiciation! ITS A DOGGIE!!!!

I had a chihuahua,  "turbish mc tavish" Aka toby. He was a gutsy little bugger who would have taken on a tractor if given the chance.

RIP. Katie.  hug My neighbours maltese, was a pig hunting dog. Katie was 1/2 the size of a normsal maltese. 15 cm? to her shoulder. She was 14 &tiny!

Little dogs have spunk.

Sorry for writing a book. dunno

They do think that. Yes feeding them costs less but smaller breeds have a lot more maintenance.

There's definitely something to be said for the smaller breeds - they don't let their size hold them back! And they can give as much love as an English Mastiff!

When we are off lead at the park.... I reach for the lead twice as fast if I see a small breed barreling towards us.
We call it.... small dog syndrome!  tongue  feisty little buggers that they are. They WILL prove, size is irrelevant to them.

Russells are a menace in our park! laughing I don't mind too much, as most of the owners are very responsible.

There has only been one time when I've gotten angry at a Russell's owner. A few years ago, I was on my way through the park to my 6th Form and a Russell came pelting over to me, yapping. I laughed and nodded to the owner, then carried on walking. Then the little menace fastened his teeth onto my ankle and wouldn't let go! Even then, I was surprised, but all I did was ask the owner to come and get his dog when I noticed he was just standing there. The owner just carried on walking, not even bothering to call his dog away.

I had to launch into the man with a few choice words before he finally called his dog away. No apology, no attempt to see if I was alright. I don't blame the dog. For whatever reason, he thought I was a threat. I blame the owner for not being responsible enough to control and/or train his dog.

I've never minded a dog making noise at me. When I was little, in the same park, we were out as a family. A woman's two greyhounds suddenly raced over to me, circling, barking and growling. Even then, it didn't bother me in the slightest! The woman was full of apologies, but I was giggling away! tongue

I am a firm believer that no matter the size, breed, nature of your dog..... training is not a choise, it is a way of life! If you can't invest the time, don't get a dog & never let it off lead!

We live by nicely, gently, hello?.... come! Mine must listen from young pups or there is no freedom (off lead).

A dog is going to behave like a dog, but they're domesticated animals, so they need to be able to coexist with humans and other dogs. I understand that some dogs just don't like others. That can be worked around. However, if your dog is human aggressive or severely dog aggressive and the owner has no control, it should be kept on a lead and/or muzzled, if necessary.

There's a young Stafford bitch a couple of houses down from us, at the end of the strip of land behind our house. We had a huge amount of trouble with her, as she used to fling herself at her garden fence whenever a dog or person walked past. There was no way we could avoid her, so we had to take Demps past. He scraped up his pads quite badly one time, in reaction to her snarling at him.

That poor dog was left out in the garden all day, with little to no shelter. I've only ever seen/heard of her out for a walk twice. One of those times, she'd escaped from her front garden and was chasing after Dempsey when mum was with him. The owners called her back, but I've only ever seen her out once aside from that.

I think somebody must have complained or phoned the RSPCA, as she's rarely out in the garden now. If she is, a glance through the front gate shows that the door is left open for her. However, although that stops her from following people along the gate and scaring them/dogs, I think it's worse in a way. She probably doesn't get any exercise at all.

Such a beautiful, dark brindle dog. Would probably be a very friendly little thing if she was cared for properly! No Stafford should ever have to feel that he/she has to protect their property 24/7 against everything and everyone. It's too much stress for a dog to put up with.

Sounds as if they shouldn't have any dog!
That annoys me no end!

My ex neighbour had 2 shelties. In 4 yrs she was there I never saw the dogs leave the property nor go inside even once.
She & I were not friends as I voiced my opinion to her numerous times. One had a deformed leg from birthing problems, so she said she couldnt walk him. CRAP! He walked with a hobble & had no problem running in the yard. As for the girl.... you can't walk her because?....

We never had coffee together. I have no idea why??? whistling

but over the last few decades, he's been bred to love and accept people

People think that a fighting dog has been bred to be aggressive to all, but most would be killed by their owners if they showed any human agro!
