Axel: in the wars again

Post by Shisa on Thu Oct 09, 2014 8:47 am

What is it with this dog!?

Saturday at school I noticed he was limping when I got him out the car. He did hurt his left front shoulder ligament/tendons/muscles as a pup and when they run and play like hooligans he gets a bit limpy every now and then. I can't always stop them.
He skipped his class and I put him on rest and anti-flams like I always do.
Monday he was ok, limping slightly.
Tuesday night we didn't sleep because he was in so much pain he just kept moaning and couldn't find a comfy position. I had also run out of Rimadyl and the vet wouldn't give me even one to just carry him through till my appointment for yesterday. I was so pissed off!
What worked me up even more was that all 3 of the vets I prefer going to, are on holiday! 3 Different practices, all off at the same time  angry
So I got to the vet yesterday morning. He poked and prodded and said we'll have to x-ray the shoulder as he can't really find what is causing the pain but he thinks it's the shoulder. I said it's not the shoulder and had to show him where the painful spot was. It's the bit on his leg between the 'armpit' and elbow. If you rub from the side to side on the leg he wimpers. If you rub from armpit to elbow he closes his eyes and moans from pleasure tongue
I'm still convinced it's the ligaments/tendons but I'm taking Axel for x-rays Tuesday.
I (please dearest God) hope it's not Elbow dysplasia, like the vet is now trying to convince me. I'll also see my proper vet then.
It'll be better to see and know for sure as the large breed puppies do get Osteochondrosis of the shoulder or elbow because they grow so fast.
This can be surgically fixed at least.

If it's dysplasia .... crying crying crying there goes my working dog dreams.

He's been extremely bored today. I have him at work with me and he's been tied up to the chair with enough space to get to his water and move around the tiniest bit.

What a worry.

Were his parents tested for ED?

If his parents & other ancesters (up to 5 generations) had good elbows it's less likely that it's ED.
