Hello all, new here :)

Post by Deactivated Upon Request on Sun Nov 30, 2014 10:54 pm

Hi All,

Just wanted to introduce myself.

I've been looking for a friendly dog related forum for a while now to discuss all things dogs.

I came across this site by accident this evening after doing a google search after finding a lump on my dog. She had a lump removed at the begining of the year which turned out to be cancer so we are kind of on alert this time around.

She will be off to the vets tomorrow hopefully, if they can fit us in.

Tip for anyone, don't google illnesses as it will scare the life out of you laughing

Anyway my name is Chris and i'm from the midlands.

We have one dog named Oreo, she is a black labrador cross, so not a pure breed but a lovely dog.

She is around 9 years old and we rescued her around 3 years ago from our local RSPCA.

She isn't that healthy, along with the lump we found this year she also suffers with what the vet has put down as allergies.

We've spent thousands of pounds (thank goodness for insurance) and hundreds of hours tralling the internet trying to make her more comfortable. Unfortunately, she hasn't had a diaognosis despite having various tests. Fortunately, she seems to be a bit more relaxed now with a regular routine of feet washes.

Other than this she is a lovely natured dog, who enjoys her walks (even if it takes her a little longer with her aging bones), and she loves her toys.

I think she would have made a great police sniffer dog as she knows if anyone is eating anything within a 20m radius. laughing

Anyway, that's me and I look forward to speaking to some of you soon.

Welcome Brummiedog aka Chris! You have certainly stumbled across the friendliest all-dog forum!

So sorry to hear about Oreo's nasty lump - did the vet indicate whether it was malignant or benign?

Wishing you all the best good fortune with your visit to the vet Monday; do let us know the outcome.

Hello Chris, glad you could make it. You're very welcome here!

Poor Oreo, I hope the vet visit goes well today, please let us know. Lumps in older dogs can often be fatty tissue, so we'll all keep our fingers crossed for her.

I take it the allergies affect her paws? If so, a wipe down with salty water after every walk can help, plus you could try rubbing in some coconut oil a couple of times a day. It's brilliant stuff & is totally non toxic! Try to get the organic, extra virgin oil. It's a little expensive, but you use a tiny amount & it lasts for ages.

Hiya! happy Very nice to meet you and your beautiful Oreo!

To be honest, I think you've done everything right! Recognising a potential problem and scheduling a vet appointment was probably the best thing you could have done. happy As Caryll mentioned earlier, it could just be a fatty lipoma. But it's better to be safe than sorry!

Well done for rescuing her, as well! A lot of people don't even spare a second glance at dogs older than three, despite how rewarding the older ones can be. sad

And I definitely think coconut oil is worth a try with the allergies! It's fantastic stuff! Our Demps gets very sore paws when the grass is wet or has just been cut, but coconut oil really helps.

Hi all,

thanks for the kind welcomes.

Unfortunately, our vet cannot fit us in until Wednesday as we wanted a specific vet (the one who looked after her last time) as she is in surgery until Wednesday. Fortunately, they've squeezed us in as the lump that appeared is not far from the last one so I guess the earlier the better with these things. Just hope that if surgery is needed again Oreo can cope with it as she felt very sorry for herself in Feb.

In answer to your questions unfortuntately it was a malignant lump but the vet was confident that she had taken it all out. She said the chances of another lump were higher, I just didn't think it would be this quick.

Hopefully it is a fatty lump but I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best as they say.

With her allergies, she seems to lick and chew her back feet. Now we've gotten control over it she seems to be only going for the one and she seems to get what look like hot spots between her one paw. It often flares up without warning and it looks very sore.

We use either salty water or hibiscrub diluted to wash her feet which seems to help.

We've tried most things, from steriod creams to thornit powder and lots in between. We've come to the conclusion that the medical stuff seems to make her worse and the natural stuff seems to help a little better.

So coconut oil is worth a shot. Any idea's where I can get it from?

She is a lovely dog and fell in love with her straight away. We just knew there and then she was the one. There is a long story how we came across her. Maybe I can share it sometime?

Thanks again for the kind welcomes happy

I do hope the lump is nothing.

Some supermarkets sell it. Certainly Holland and Barrett do (at a cost!). But we get ours online - Amazon do some good deals on it.

I'll keep Oreo in my thoughts and prayers! Please let us know how the vet trip goes! happy And you could try Amazon for the coconut oil. Ideally, it should be extra virgin and cold pressed.

Please do share the story! happy

So we've been to the vets.

There is good news and there is a bit of not so good.

The not so good is that she is in tomorrow for an opperation to remove the lump.

The good news is that she thinks it's just a fatty lump but given the history of Oreo she would rather take it out to be 100% sure.

She was very concerned at first as she thought the same lump had returned however was pleased when she realised it was a different place.

She really looked after her earlier in the year and please she can fit us in so soon.

Thank goodness for insurance and thank you all for your kind words happy

Well, as you say, good & bad news!

At least it sounds like it isn't a return of the cancer, but it's still worrying when your fur baby has to have an operation.

Good luck - she'll be home again before you know it!

Thanks Guys.

Just dropped her off at the vets.

Got to call at about 2pm to see how it went and picking her up around 5:30 all being well. Then if it's anything like last time it'll be a long night of crying and pacing around.

We've been told she is well and has come round from the opperation.

She's had three lumps removed in the chest area.

We are leaving shortly (our appointment is at 5:30) to have a chat with the vet about how it went and if further treatment is required (but suspect we won't know that bit until the results of the tests come back).

I'm glad she's through the worst of it now, but I know she won't sleep much tonight and expect I am in for a long night with her.

Thanks for your kind wishes happy

I know how worrying it is on the first night when your furbaby comes back from an operation. I bet she'll be back on her feet and wagging her tail in no time, though! hug

How long will the results take?
