Soooo.....

My knee replacement is set for 9th September. Would've been sooner but I wanted a short holiday first!

Terrified!

No need to be terrified, just think of all the benefits, and how you'll feel fabulous later. hug

I've pm'd you Caryll. Don't be terrified! I'll admit that I was too but it wasn't hundredth as bad as I feared, and the discomfort afterwards was less than before because they stuff you with painkillers and wait on you hand and foot. It's quite a little holiday really for us mums! There's always a fly in the ointment and that is the physios! It's all for the best though. thumbs up

Hope it goes well.
One of my customers recently had a knee replacement and I had to bite my cheek and lips to keep from laughing when he told me how it's done... Apparently they sawed of his 'old' knee then placed the new one and hammered that in place and he now has big screws keeping it all together.

Big screws? I recommend bone cement, that's what is usually used!

No Lynda, you're wrong. It's screws. They used a drill to get the screws in they're so big.

My step dad had one of his knees done with screws. He'll be doing the other in the next yr or so depending on the deterioration speed. Painful for a  couple of weeks but..... he didn't do his exercises everyday so it took longer to heal than it should have.

My mums friend of 95? odd has had both knees & a hip done 2 yrs ago. At her age they won't but.... she wants the other hip done as she loves her new joints after a month.

You'll be ok Caryll. Just remember to do your physio daily without exception! Especially in the begining.

P.s. the pain killers are damn good I hear & get you through the 1st few weeks.

Depends on when Lydda had it done? They certainly did use a bone cement some yrs ago I believe.

Well you live and learn.

I had my partial knee replacement in March last year, Tracy, (bottom of the femur and kneecap) and bone cement was used - I thought it was normal these days except obviously if there are complications.
Everyone's different of course.

Caryll, you'll be fine - screws or no screws (and I'm betting on no screws). Physio is vital though, as Tracy says, I couldn't believe how much it helped me.

I would guess whether they use cement or screws depends on the bone density, degree of deterioration, part or full replacement etc, etc, etc.

Mum's friend & my step dad both had full joint replacements with titanium.
