Old boy hit by car.

Post by tracyp on Sat Jul 18, 2015 3:38 pm

Not mine.

12yr kelpie. His name is Oli. Been in a cast 14 wks. Recast once. Vet said he could manipulate the bone before a new cast is on..

Why? If its set correctly initially theres no need. Hes an old boy it will take longer to heal. He was hit by a car. He broke his right tib&  fib. Vet says bone graft, or amputation.  Or just lets see. I'm suspicious.  I think another opion is waranted.

He is 12. Id be reluctant  to put him under but.... older dog... sure healing time is linger, but something here dosent add up...

Poor dog.

Regrettably, sometimes old bones just won't heal (my step-father broke his leg at the age of 79 years and it just wouldn't knit; it had to be amputated).

Depending on how happy/comfortable the dog is currently, and how otherwise fit and healthy in general, there may be a difficult decision ahead. A second opinion would certainly be called for here.

Fingers and paws crossed for Oli hug

Certainly you can tell him to get a second opinion, and that old bones don,t always heal as well as younger bones. I just hope the outcome is good for Oli.

I'd always say that a second opinion is worth the effort if an owner ever has any doubts. Even if the doubts are quite silly, it's better to ask and be placated than to regret never asking. In this case, it does seem to be a bit strange for the vet to say that. confused

It does seem a bit strange. Was he anaesthetised when the first cast was put on? If so, surely the bone could have been manipulated then?

I do understand that if the bone WON'T heal, then amputation is the only option, though.

Poor Oli, when something feels off get a second opinion.
