It must be very distressing for you when she has a fit, but so long as Ruby is happy and enjoying life between fits that's the main thing.

that's the trouble Lynda, I don't think she's enjoying life and she's certainly not happy. there is no recognition from her at all, the lights are barely on and no-one is home

Posts from "somewhere else" - I'm sure that a lot of you will recognise this "topic". Kathy (who I happen to like) and I have tried very very gently to suggest that the time has come to let this poor dog go.

I know what I would do - does anyone else have an opinion? (It won't be relayed - don't worry)

Bless her. Sounds like Ruby's not doing so well sad

As much as the decision must be so painful, my outside opinion would be to put her to sleep at this point. I do understand why she's reluctant to though! To just snap your fingers and decide a dog's fate while she's sitting right in front of you is an awful thing to have to do. sad

Poor Ruby, and poor Jane. I feel so very much for them both.

Personally I would have ended Ruby's suffering some time ago. She has no quality of life and is often distressed. I know it's hard - I've been in that position. - but you have to think of the dog's suffering. And Ruby is suffering.

I have to agree with the above posts ^

It's never easy and never will be, but it's the last act of kindest you can give your dog, and she hasn't had any sort of quality of life for a while now sad

With many illnesses you can use medication to prolong an active and quality life. But L2 HGA leaves no life quality at all. Only confusion & mental anguish.

Thank you all for your thoughts, which concur with my own.

I've tried to nudge her gently (as had Kathy) - I don't think we can do any more.

It is VERY hard, but is something we all have to face up to eventually; to put our own suffering at losing our loved one aside to grant our loved one peace and release from their own suffering. Animals are luckier than humans in this respect.

Bandit was like this. He had cancer taht was eating up everything that was him. There was nothing anybody could do.

He lost all his body muscle, he was peeing blood clots & his energy levels were next to nothing. In short, he was unhappy.

We made that decision & ended his suffering.

Personally I have regretted that day ever since, although I know it was the right thing to do.

Zeta had bone cancer and was on borrowed time, but still herself on medications. When her affected leg broke, I called the vet to the house so save her as much anguish as possible, although when he walked through the door she seemed to know and bolted in panic and had to be caught. I regret that her last moments were of fright.

Kuchar's litter brother Trigger, at only 3 months old, we discovered had congenital emphysema and was put down at the vet's after going in for xray. I don't regret that as he had been struggling to breathe in the 4 days and 3 nights (especially the nights) that we had him. Although it broke our hearts.

The one dog I regret not having put down was Rio. She too had bone cancer, but deteriorated rapidly one day and during the evening I resolved to take her to the vet in the morning. But at about midnight she was so bad that I rang the duty vet and asked him to come out - and he refused as he was "in bed with my wife". Now Rio always used to sleep on my bed with me, but by now couldn't walk and was lying on the sofa, so my son stayed downstairs with her while I got a few hours sleep before taking her to the vet in the morning. Poor Rio apparently crawled on her belly to the foot of the stairs, and there died, without me who she was trying to get to. I'll always regret that.

Lynda, you've always done the best for your dogs hug Loss is a terrible thing and it so often brings guilt with it, but I think sometimes it's good to remind yourself that you gave all of those dogs a good life, no matter what lengths they were.
