Nicking the quick when clipping nails
Thought I'd share my tried and tested remedy.
Cornstarch (for thickening sauces, it's called Maizena here) or Custard powder.
I was trimming nails and nicked Xans' again. His quick grows right to the tip of the nail so you have to be careful and when he won't hold still...
I scoop a bit onto the tip of a teaspoon and keep pressing the nail tip into it till it stops bleeding through.
Just watch your pooch as they will lick it.

Eleanor uses flour or an antiseptic powder.

Yes, though luckily Dempsey's only had his quick caught once, I believe. I prefer to use the antiseptic powder, but flour is just as good (minus the antiseptic properties) at stopping bleeding, so it's good if I don't have anything else.

I've also used flour in a crisis but the cornstarch works better. It's more absorbent.
Xan hates having his nails cut and always yanks his foot at a critical moment.

Re: Nicking the quick when clipping nails
We don't usually have any need for cornstarch in cooking, so it isn't something we typically have in the house. Flour, however, is a common ingredient! Still prefer to use styptic/antiseptic powder, but the flour will do in a pinch.

hence the reason I can vouch for custard powders' effectiveness

I'm not sure I've ever actually used that, even just for cooking! Can't remember ever making custard!

Corn flower is the best to thicken a soup, broth or gravey, stops slight bleeding very quick without infection.
Jess is a bitch... especially when I need to clip her front nails. (Haven't clipped the back since she was 3.) Only cut too short once ever. Used paw paw ointment. Ive used it on myself since a child for anything from a paper cut to a burn to an open infection to an eye infection. Brilliant! Use it anywhere, &I mean anywhere! Open cuts, eyes, cut gums, ... eat it if you want....So many uses. I am never without a tub.
That and savlon.
Dog or human, chook, cat, whatever? Corn flower works a treat! Also the best for bubs bums in nappies with a rash.
