Summer storms

Storms are quite common in the summer. If your dog suffers from anxiety as a response to loud noises, make sure you're prepared and can recognise the signs of a storm brewing.

Please be careful when walking your dogs. If you find yourself caught in a storm, try to seek shelter in a building (preferably one with lightning protection). Failing this, seek refuge in a car.

Try to move away from open, spacious areas of land and avoid exposed hills. If you can't do this, assume a crouching position, with your hands and head tucked in towards your knees to make yourself as small as you can. Stay as far away from water and tall/lone trees as possible!

Make sure you're aware of objects which may attract/conduct lightning strikes - avoid these objects! This includes electrical appliances, umbrellas, golf clubs, bikes, etc..

The general rule for storm safety is to look for cover if the length of time between thunder and lightning is less than 30 seconds. Remain in this shelter, if possible, for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.

If at any point you start to feel your hair standing on end, assume the position mentioned earlier.
