Son says they have a 'foods of the world' isle in his local supermarket. He says the British shelf only has: Heinz beans, Coleman's mustard, Tetley teabags, and Cadbury's flakes on it.

Re: BEER
I'm from a very varied family: On my mothers side we're South African with some French. My dad is Dutch and I have a German uncle. I've been exposed to a broad range of 'traditional, family foods'.
I love food. I'm not fat because I don't get exercise, I'm fat because I like to eat lekker.

How could I forget the wursts! I'll give them that, Germany makes some lovely sausages! Rosti is nice too. Stollen is only for Christmas, and only then if you can bear to eat marzipan. I'll pass on the pickled cabbage and damp noodles (I think you have to be brought up on them to appreciate them) and I don't know what Eisbein is. I think this was half my problem when in Germany - my command of German was insufficient to properly translate a menu, and I'm a bit of a fussy eater anyway.

I don't know what Eisbein is. [/quote]
It's smoked and pickled pork hock.
My mum makes pea soup and sticks one of these in. Cooks it till it sloughs off the bone OMG! fabulous.

Re: BEER
Pea and ham soup then! Very nice, although tedious to make from scratch.
Now, I'm half Polish - anyone up for borscht?

Re: BEER
I just asked because we were (off topic I know) talking about German food which, in my experience anyway, is quite heavily meat based.
The borscht I make is from my Polish father's recipe; it's a "peasants' bortscht and includes lamb, although I use casserole beef. The main and vital ingredient is beetroot, and I have seen vegetarian variants.
We've gone a long way from beer, so I will stop now!

Re: BEER
Off topic or not, it's very interesting!
I can't stand borscht, mainly because I can't stand beetroot!

Re: BEER
Ah, that explains your double !
I don't like pickled beetroot myself (as normally found in salads in England - cold) but cooked from fresh in borscht (and hot) it is totally different, well I think so anyway but then I was brought up on it. My children love it and my sister's children love it. It's basically a stew and I don't know how it would work without meat but I have made it with very little meat when hard pressed!
PS how do you stand on Oxo cubes? tbh I'd find it difficult to make a good borscht without them.

Re: BEER
In which case, borscht may well work without meat for vegetarians. ( I won't try it myself though being a committed omnivore).
Thank goodness, due to the large influx of Poles in our area, our local Tesco has a special Polish section including raw fresh beetroot (albeit organic at horrific price).
