Dempsey's dew claws
Poor Dempsey. His dew claws both grow at an alarming rate & curl round. They need to be clipped fairly regularly (although I am embarrassed to say that I don't do it often enough) or he catches them and they break - very painful!
Well, with the move I've neglected them. His left one actually snapped off (at the correct place luckily) the other day when he was playing with Eleanor, but the right one had cracked and was sore. I left it to see if the soreness would lessen before I tried clipping it, but this morning he kept lifting his paw off the ground, so it was time to act.
I laid him down on his back and got the clippers in place.
SNIP.
The yelp was horrendous! The big cissy almost screamed and then went bouncing around with his tail wagging furiously as if to say "Don't hurt me again please!"
He's had a couple of painkillers and is now fast asleep!

In my experience, the bigger they are, the babier they are!

Err... Sorry, playing? Change that to 'humping' please! The little sod was having inappropriate relations with my new jumper!

Poor boy.
Max next door (great dane x mastiff) goes on the attack if you try to cut his, they are so big & hard. Now, every week he lays down beside mum & she files them with a course false nail file. He's not trying to bite her, no one has to hold him down & he thinks shes fussing on him.
Win, win!

We have a battery powered file, but it's no good for a split or broken claw - it would be too painful.
