Re: IPO/SCHUTZHUND
Some thing i fully intend to do in the future, Chance would be great apart from his temperament.
But we have said we plan on an ambull from a pup in the future as well as boxer, cane corso or similar at different times which i'd love to do it with

I hope Linda (Serendipity) will come on and talk about her schutzhund work with her GSD bitch, Link. She was getting pretty good at it & has passed several stages (I think!).

Wow, that's brilliant!
I remember watching your videos of her when she started her man work (I don't know what it's actually called! ) and she was so impressive!

http://www.schutzhund-training.net/bh.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schutzhund
The BH OR Begleithundprüfung
Is the first test to assess the dogs suitability to go onto Schutzhund or IPO.
Its a 2 part test, Obedience and Traffic although there is a written test in the beggining
When we passed ours it was -5, and thick with snow and Link was in Season.
I was very proud of her that day
Since then we have been working very hard in training towards our first IPO 1 title
We are trialing in March Wish us luck
We track at least 3 times a week (finding suitable ground isnt easy) Your dog needs to have a good nose and be able to indicate different articles of wood, felt and leather, mine has these but we also have other articles made of different materials. We track with 7 articles at present on an aged track with not many treats (maybe 10 on a 400 pace track that has maybe 5 legs in it and 4 corners.
We go to club at least twice a week and find extra time in when we can.
It takes a lot of commitment, hard work and time to train your dog and yourself and often Involves being outside in all weathers for a whole day!
You need to be well equipped too-collars for this leads for that. Dumbells balls lots of balls and treats too!
The Obedience involves a lot of heelwork! Different paces, turns, positions on the move and doing a figure of eight in a group. Also a pistol is fired during the heeling exercise. There are 3 dumbell positions-flat retrieve, retrieve of a 1 mtr hurdle and an A frame (about 6-7 feet)
That but not least there is the send away in which the dog has to run away from you the distance of the field and then down facing you)
The Protection-There are several parts to this the hold and bark, the escape, the outs, the long bite and the transport-phew!
Just a little insight into my world

Re: IPO/SCHUTZHUND
Now I know why I never got involved! And I thought obedience training was tough!
So, from what I can make out, Link has passed the first stage, and can now go into schutzhund proper? Or have I over simplified it?

I'm not surprised you were proud of her! That's amazing! Gotta say, if I was in her position on that day, I wouldn't have made it out of the house!
Good luck with it all! Sounds like you've got a lot on your hands, but I bet you and Link will do great!

Re: IPO/SCHUTZHUND
I went to a training camp today and omg! I considered to do this with Axel and/or Lequita but will defenitely not.
I could not live with a dog that 'driven' if we can call it that. The heelwork was excellent but the dogs awful!

I've not seen Schutzhund first hand, so I haven't got a clue! The training really is impressive though!

I think you would find it very different here in the UK
The dog should be able to switch on in drive when needed but also be able to be able to live in a family enviroment
If it cannot then the dog wouldnt be suitable for IPO.
I am trialing Link for our IPO 1 this month

Re: IPO/SCHUTZHUND
I do not want to mention any names, just in case.
I am sure not everyone is the same but these were some national and world champ people and dogs.
These are serious Schutzhund people. They don't work, they train and breed working dogs.
One of the ladies from my school has bought 3 dogs from one breeder and what does he say about them: Pity they're not sheep, then I could eat my mistakes and not put them in pet homes.
Left a very bad taste in my mouth. I also do not like their style of training.
I'm sticking to Obedience.

Re: IPO/SCHUTZHUND
They're not all like that! One of the biggest & most successful trainers in the UK is Vislor. Yes, they breed GSDs (the very occasional litter) but their main business is training...
http://www.vislor.com/dog-trainers/
As you can see from the short video, Kai has been 100% trained by Travis & is a very happy, well adjusted dog who loves working!
