I'm as disgusted now as I was when the practice first started abroad.

I think it's disgusting. I'm totally against cloning.

It's just selfish to clone a dog for the reasons these people are doing it. The dog will have terrible health issues because of it, but apparently that isn't enough to discourage them.

I watched the TV show they did about it the other day, utterly disgusting AND they picked the family who could have afforded it off their own backs

Grisly isn't it. I didn't watch the programme but it seems to me that people are deluding themselves if they think that cloning an animal will result in a "Mini Me" of that animal. Personality for a start cannot be cloned. And I seem to remember seeing a calf that was cloned and its markings were nothing like those of the cell donor.

I just can't imagine spending money like that on something that would cause harm to an animal, rather than spending that money on a good cause.

I'm sorry to say that I believe, that once technology proceeded to that point where it became possible, the scientists couldn't resist the urge to see "what happens if" - hence Dolly the sheep. Who died.
That it's spread to the pet world, where people think they can create an exact reproduction/reincarnation of a dearly loved pet is very, very regrettable.

I think most people knew it would happen sooner or later, but hoped that it wouldn't.

True and it was only a matter of time before it spread to pets. It's scary how far they might be willing to go with cloning. Just because they can, doesn't mean they shouldLyndaW wrote:I'm sorry to say that I believe, that once technology proceeded to that point where it became possible, the scientists couldn't resist the urge to see "what happens if" - hence Dolly the sheep. There's no way I would ever want a pet cloned, they are all individuals and I love them for that

I would have my Xan cloned in a second if I could. None of the others, just him.
He is just the most amazing dog imaginable and to always have a version of him would be wonderful.

Re: Britain's first cloned dog
There are still doubts, however, about the temperament of cloned animals. It's true that they will look the same, but tests have proved that the temperaments, for whatever reason, don't always replicate.

Re: Britain's first cloned dog
Temperament is environmental and genetic. I would take my one-hour old pup home and raise it by hand.
Also you're only getting a version of your dog not the same dog.

Re: Britain's first cloned dog
I never would. It deviates so far from nature that there will likely never be a cloned animal produced without health defects. It's one of those situations which I wish scientists would just leave well enough alone.
