Almost had a heart attack
I though I lost Bella. I could not find her at doggy breakfast time. spent about 20 minutes calling her looking under everything. abby's bed, my bed, the lounge chairs, outside, in the shed, under the cars I had looked everywhere. I was starting to panic. finally I heard her bark. She had managed to get up into my bed and under the blanket and must have just gone to sleep.

That's the trouble - when it comes to smaller dogs, they can bury themselves in tiny little spaces where you can't find them!
Hope your heart is back to normal now!

Instant panic attack.
I 'lost' my mums Pomeranian once. That is like 10 heart attacks because it's not your dog. She'd gotten out a small gap between the wall and my outside sliding gate. I finally heard some school children trying to shoo a dog away and ran down the street.
Little cow ran away from me into the school yard and I finally got her cornered with the help of some of the kids. I'm there hair standing in all direction, bra-less, barefoot in my pajamas. I almost murdered her!

Oh dear!
Dempsey's a largish dog, so he hasn't really gotten lost many times. There was one time, though, where we were searching for him and couldn't find him anywhere. He'd taken to laying underneath the bed, which is quite big and has storage boxes, old clothes, furniture throws, etc., underneath it. We looked underneath and couldn't find him there either. Looked all over!
Eventually, we got out the torch and looked under the bed again. All of a sudden, we saw the faint outline of his ears poking out from behind a pile of clothes and boxes. He'd snuck into the bedroom and gone to sleep in there!

Re: Almost had a heart attack
Kuchar got seriously lost one evening last summer. Little beast had pushed through the garden gate (admittedly it was rickety, but he bent the iron bars!) unbeknownst to my son or myself, until we wondered where he was. It took about an hour to locate him, by which time it was a black night and we were looking for a nearly black dog. Fortunately before he got onto a main road he was pestering a young couple with their dogs to play with him. His recall went totally out of the window, and I only caught him because I told him sternly "SIT" and the greedy-guts did to get his treat.
PS the fence and gate have now all been renewed to Fort Knox strength.

It's a horrible feeling when you can't find them, especially when your calling them and they don't come

As an aside, does anyone think (as I tend to) that bitches are less likely to "escape" than dogs?

Referring to sexually dimorphic behaviours, yes, very often they will (in my opinion). While you do get some bitches who just love to escape and roam, most of it seems to be males - entire males in particular, who enjoy the wind in their hair and their feet in the air as they urinate up every damn corner.

That just reminded me of my sisters dog when I was babysitting. He took off when I let him out for the toilet and I couldn't go after him because I was in the house alone with three kids. He came back to a piece of grass near the house, looked at me standing at the door calling him, then took off again with a big goofy happy look on his face. He came back eventually but I made sure I took one of my extending leads with me the next time I was babysitting.
