New Scientific Journal from the Kennel Club
KC heralds new scientific journal
Created: 23/04/2014
THE KENNEL Club has announced the launch of a new, online scientific journal, Canine Genetics and Epidemiology.
The independent journal, which is available free to everyone, addresses genetic and epidemiological research focused on dogs and other canids. Its articles have extended lay summaries and ‘key take-home messages’ aimed at breeders, owners and other interested parties, as well as scientists and vets, the KC said.
The first issue is now available at www.cgejournal.org and its articles include one on the genetics behind eye disorders in various breeds and those found specifically in Golden Retrievers, and one on approaches to canine health monitoring. A further two articles will be published each quarter.
Medical advances
The journal will be led by two editors-in-chief – Bill Ollier, who is professor of immunogenetics and co-director of the Centre for Integrated Genomic Medical Research at Manchester University, and Gustavo Aguirre, professor of medical genetics and ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. They will be supported by an international editorial board.
The KC’s health information manager, Aimée Llewellyn, said: "This journal is a perfect way to support evidence-based medical advances for the veterinary profession, which they are under increasing pressure to consider.
"As the first journal focusing purely on canine-specific research, the journal will have an impact on the work of researchers around the globe as well as provide the general public and world of dogs with an amazing opportunity to keep up to date with research in canine genetics and epidemiology.
"We feel very privileged to be involved with a project focused on bringing clear, accurate, and informative research in an inclusive way to all of those who care about dog health, making science accessible to all.”
Prof Ollier said: "Dogs spontaneously develop many of the conditions seen in man, and research at this interface provides important insight into how genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to both health and disease. This represents a ‘win’ for both species.
"The new journal provides a much-needed open access mechanism for reporting all aspects of this research. Free and open access of research findings to both scientists and the dog-owning public also provides a major opportunity for engagement in research and science.”
The journal has been developed in conjunction with open access publisher BioMed Central. Its executive vice-president, Deborah Kahn, said: "We are delighted to welcome this journal to our growing portfolio of journals, and look forward to working closely with the KC on this exciting new launch.”

Yet to see how it pans out, but for those who are interested in the health research that's going on, it should be interesting.
