Cure for HIV in babies has worked

They still need to make sure that it doesn't come back after the treatment is stopped, but it's great news!

That is fabulous if it works.
Sorry for sounding pessimistic but aren't they counting their chickens before they hatch?
Aids is a very big problem here so it would be an absolute miracle if the babies are free after stopping the medication.

I suppose all they can do now is wait & see.

Well, they did say that it's not a 'cure' yet, as they haven't completed the test. Fingers crossed though!

Let me tell you guys what some 'African' people consider a cure:
According to the Sangomas (tribal healers/magic people) having sex with a virgin will cure your aids. It has resulted in a huge increase of rape of young girls and babies. Supposedly the younger the virgin the more potent the cure.

Sick, sick, sick! but then our president recons if you just shower after sex you'll be fine and a previous minister of Health advised eating certain fruit and vegetables as a cure.

It's fun living in the zoo.

I'd heard about the virgin one, but didn't realise that it's a common practice. Had no idea about the 'showering and fruit' ones.

Amongst a certain demographic, it is believed to be true.
It's unfortunate that you have to deal with a certain cultural mindset and that they refuse to believe anything outside their comfort zone.

That's the trouble with some areas, if they have deep-seated cultural views. Very difficult to change their ways!

I was told a few years ago of the virgin and young child, baby theories as a good friend of mine from Denmark is married to a lovely SA girl and lives there now , it is so horrifying

I've heard of this too, and it's absolutely terrible for young girls and babies, as well as being completely erroneous as to its "curative powers".

I really don't want to hurt peoples' sensitivities, but the sad fact is that it is a belief/possible misconception that HIV/AIDS is more prevalent in Africa than anywhere else, and especially in the more southern areas.

It's a dreadful scourge of modern times and first and foremost I would wish with all my heart that this fairytale of raping young girls and babies as a cure could be educated away forever.
