You're loosing me on the 2nd point Jaymi, "hugging". Tyson & Jess both nuzzle in to get closer, if Tysons tail went any faster in excitement of a hug & fuss it would damn well fall off so.. I would NOT be hard pressed to find a dog who "actually enjoys a hug". "Wanna a cuddle" he runs to me, jumps up, rolls for a tummy scratch, oh the doggie drool... just a moment while I wash my face. He just loves a cuddle!
The rest of the article I pretty much either agree with or is food for thought.
Thanks for posting that one Caryll. A very interesting & thought provoking read.

I think hugging is more of a learned behaviour with dogs. A lot don't seem to like it, but some will tolerate/enjoy it if they've been brought up with lots of snuggles. Dempsey loves it! Probably because he was hand reared and constantly snuggled up to somebody with his milk bottle. He loves to cuddle up to you and either bury his head or rest his chin on your shoulder.
Having said that, I would never go up to another dog and give him/her a bear hug.
I think the first point was really good! It's so easy to forget how perceptible dogs are.
I think Demps must be a very strange dog, as he also enjoys having his head rubbed and patted. The patting is funny, as it sends him to sleep!
YES! This, so much!
The stuff about tension, behavioural and through the leash, is really good.
Another YES! There's a horrible old man at the end of our street, who always barks at Dempsey. He's a nasty piece of work and gives me the creeps. Probably the only elderly person I've ever had a go at.

Forcing your dog to interact with dogs or people she clearly doesn’t like

Don't bark at a dog as you pass it on the street.

My Xan and Sheba don't like being hugged. They'll tolerate it but defenitely will find the world a better place without it.
Hugging is a primate behaviour and not a canine.

The face one yeah though. I never pet a dogs face, only the bottom of the muzzle/neck and over the shoulders (or belly if they roll over)

I don't slap a dog around the face (which patting in this area must feel like), but I do stroke gently over the top of the head and gently pull their ears through my hands. I've had no complaints yet - maybe they're just tolerating me?

Good article
Millie hates hugs, unless she comes over to you and sits on your knee. You try it any other time and she walks away.
Wee Bella will just be happy to do anything that means she is getting attention from people.
it still amazes me every day that they know when I'm going out without them or I'm taking them. As soon as I stand up, before putting on a coat or saying a word, they know whether to go to bed or run to where the lead is. I've even sat beforehand thinking, going shopping going shopping, but it never fools them.

Oh Jess loves nothing more than an ear pull.

They are not fools! Dogs know what you're going to do the second you think of it!
