Dempsey was naughty this morning!

Took him over the park as usual & let him off the lead.

After a few minutes I always call him back, give him a fuss & let him go again - just to reinforce the recall as it isn't his strong point.

Me - Deeeeeeempsey, coooome!" Silly, excited voice, bending down & tapping my legs & looking really silly.
Dempsey - quick look round and "Yeah, right!" and carries on.
Me - "Dempsey, come!" in a slightly more commanding voice.
Dempsey - bounce, bounce, "not on your nelly!" and off he goes again.
Me - "STAY!"
Dempsey - "Blast, I went too far" and he stayed.

I caught up, put his lead on, did a little heel work & recall on lead & then let him off again.

A few minutes later, and exact repeat of the first time!

On lead, bit of heel work & recall on lead & then home!

Naughty boy!

Just be careful that it doesn't become a pattern. He doesn't recall but stays till you walk over. I always told my students that if a dog gets away with something easier twice that is the new rule.
Why will he come to you if he knows you're going to walk over eventually.

Usually he'll come first call, albeit reluctantly. But sometimes he just guages the distance and decides to ignore!

Water pistol! Dempsey come... no???  Pistol at the ready.....aim, shoot! Certainly gets their attention if you are a good aim. Distance is not a free rein.

My Spike is a royal pain! He has two modes angel and demon. He will be a dream and the next moment just refuse to do anything right, runs off with his retrieve article, refuse to come into the house when called and if I get cross he runs off a distance and stands there laughing at me.

I wouldn't want to use a water pistol on Dempsey for two reasons. 1) He's terrified of water and has been for quite some times, bless him. 2) A water pistol would be more likely to drive him away, rather than get him to come, as he needs to want to approach.

Yes, a water spray is more likely to drive away than to encourage them to come.

But water sprays are too aversive for my liking.

Demps used to be like that when he was younger, but I think that's too much effort for him now!
