To me, a shrimp is tiny. Anything over an inch long is a prawn!

Never mind - we've both just realised we were talking about different things! There were shrimp and prawns in the mix! I was talking about the tiny, tiny shrimp, but mum was talking about the big prawns on the side.

Either way, the prawns were more about five centimetres. The shrimp were about one!

Having said that, size isn't really the perfect way to classify them. 
You do get a couple of very large species of shrimp, which I believe are mistakenly referred to as 'prawns'. I don't think I'd want to get into classifications and taxonomy of crustaceans, though. So, size it is!
