Watching a US doco on online predators. "Catfish". How do people become so lonely they give money in hope of love or fall in
Love with someone they have never met?

I know it's a short question for an involved answer but...  HOW DO PEOPLE FALL FOR THESE PEOPLE?

Is their self a steam really that low?

The film origin of the scripted programme. I watched a couple of minutes of it and got fed up with all of the 'drama'.

There is also a mtv show about this. I think it is interesting, but agree how can people fall in love with some one they have never and really know very little about.

I'm proud to say that my old forum connected a few hearts! In all seriousness, they met each other on that forum and a lot of the couples are still going strong today.

My cousin almost packed up his life to move to the USA because he had 'fallen in love' with a girl.
After a little search we found out she was 10 years older than him, living in a trailer, had 3 kids and was on welfare. She was just going to clean him out and dump him.

That's sad. You really do need to be careful when you're in an online relationship, friendship or otherwise.

I cannot understand how people let this happen.

I have a friend in Paris who sent me a mini eiffle tower & french treats, I sent aussie gifts, but there is NO WAY either one of us would either ask nor send money to the other.

Getting to know someone on social media is fun - let's face it, that's what we do here! But actually 'falling in love' with someone? It's infatuation, nothing more or less.

Yes, if people physically meet up after chatting online & then find they're attracted to each other, fine (I know a couple who 'met' on a GSD forum & then got together on a group walk - they're very happy together), but you need to meet someone to get to know them properly!

Anyone who sends money or expensive gifts to a stranger they've 'met' online is foolish, and maybe needs help to socialise with 'real' people!

It is fun talking to different people,  listening to new thoughts & opinions, but try asking me for 15 thousand to help you get out of??? Bolivia because you need to pay a consulate official off or... whatever to secure your safe freedom to come home to live in your mansion.....you cannot access your millions right now.. you're a war hero who's country isn't helping, the list goes on... blah, blah, blah.....  sorry, NOPE!

I think lonely people lose sight of the fact that anyone can say anything on the internet and nobody else is the wiser!

That's very true indeed. Cept you don't type like a bloke!   & I feel very sorry for those taken by these scamsters.

I do believe that you can fall in love with somebody online, before you meet them. However, I think that caution should always be exercised.
