Got another scare yesterday
I'd taken some medication for my hayfever, had a lovely snooze, woke up, took the dogs out. We're having a blast with me throwing their toys when from the corner of my eye I see Bruno standing weirdly with foam running out his mouth.
I immediately thought - He's having a seizure from the rat poison!!! OH ****!!!
I ran to him getting myself in my 'cool place' (A place in my mind I go to in times of crises. My heartbeat steadies and I keep cool and calm for the dogs sake. I taught myself this.)
He was having difficulty breathing. He was getting air in but nothing out. His abdomen was swollen to twice it's size. He looked like he was going to pop.
I picked him up and he gave a loud belch deflating a bit. I put him on my bed and started putting dogs away while keeping an eye on him. Trying to get some jeans on as I was in my pj bottoms. He vomited up a whole lot of slime but was still not breathing properly. I got us in the car thinking if he gets better I can turn around if he gets worse I'd be that much closer to the vet.
He vomited again and went completely limp.
Again I thank my dad for being such a drill instructor when teaching me to drive.
I was going down the gravel roads at 80km an hour, shaking him, pinching him and blowing down his nose to keep him awake. When I hit the tar I flew down it at 160/170km an hour.
I also learned people are jerks! With my emergencies and lights flashing they just don't move for you.
He perked up when I got to Mossel Bay still gulping air but at least breathing better. He vomited again and went limp again although not as badly as before and perked up again after a few minutes.
When I got to the vet he was very 'ragdolly' and one eye was squinty but he looked much better.
We saw the vet and he diagnosed Gastroenteritis. His digestive tract was producing a lot of slime and when he vomited the first time (that I didn't see) he probably got some down his windpipe causing the difficulty breathing and wanting to pass out.
He had an injections to stop the vomiting and antibiotics for possible fluid in his lungs and for the gastro.
The injection hurt. He cried so hard.
I cried in the car on the way back and then just wanted to fall asleep behind the wheel.
I'm sure Bruno has a plan to send me to an early grave.
He's fine today if a bit clingy. Last night he was sleeping on top of me under the covers.

Poor thing. You reacted really well though! I hope both he and you are feeling better now!
Was the gastroenteritis caused by the rat poison or was it bacterial/viral?

We're fine. Thank you
We're not sure what caused it. Vet doesn't think it has anything to do with the poison. We think he ate something that irritated his stomach lining. They're always chewing on sticks and eating things not for consumption. Freaking dogs can be so idiotic.

Why oh why do dogs have to eat things that aren't edible?

How horrible for you - I'm glad Bruno's ok. Getting into a 'cool place' is a good thing, but coming out from it is very tiring - well done!

Oh Theresa, how terribly frightening for you both.
I'm so glad it all turned out well, but you must be feeling like a wrung-out dish cloth now

Bruno is absolutely fine. He loves the Pro-Kolin and the stupid dog eats his antibiotics like candy.
I think maybe the taste centre in his brain got affected?

He's fussy because everything is not edible.

At least you don't have to force the medication down him!
Glad he's okay, though - scary time!
