Oh Caryll you clown!
I'm not a rabid royalist but I'm pleased for our dear HRHs though; Diana would have been thrilled.

Laugh as much as you like - you won't offend me, I think the royal family are a waste of space!

I doubt you'll find many UK people easy to offend when it comes to the monarchy. Most of the people I've met aren't very big on nationalism; nobody makes fun of the English like the English do, especially when it comes to monarchy.

I think English people get angrier if somebody insults their football team!

Re: It's a girl!
You'd have loved a clip I saw on the TV many years ago then, Tracy (wish I could find it).
The show it was on said something about attracting a shy Australian (cut to a man squatting placatingly on his haunches, holding out his hand enticingly and calling in a soft voice "Here, Digger! Come to me Digger - good boy Digger."
Back to our lovely new though rather chubby princess - the names Charlotte Elizabeth Diana are perfect!

Sounds like something I'd like lynda. We take the p1ss out of everything. Sometimes taken the wrong way by non aussies but.... as we say, "we are a nation of sh1t stirrers. " & its true!
Not that I give a rats ass.... but footy teams supporters here are BRUTAL, but not like the footage I've seen of yours fighting like hooligans over "a game " (because to me, it is just a game. Not life or death.) of your footy. What we call soccer.
I must say I think her names are really lovely, (& sounding like a pom,) very appropriate taking her lines & history into consideration.

Yes I've heard about Australian Rules footie! Basically an all-in no-holds-barred war, I understand. But remember what our late great Bill Shankly said "football is not life or death; it's not. It's much more important than that." Boys will be boys!
Which is why I'm glad that our latest Royal is a girl.

we have two codes. AFL ("aussie rules" what we call football) & NRL (rugby) & you are correct. Its boys running through each other or jumping to knock another down.
Don't tell anyone (as I'm not a royalist & will have to deny I said it) but I to was hoping she had a girl.

Re: It's a girl!
I know poms love a joke just as we do but, our jokes go far further /harder at times & even my pommy friends & family raise an eyebrow sometimes.
Yeah, I have seen it a couple of times. But I hate it. Its crass, smug, cheap humour. Not my type of comedy.
Sorry to everyone who enjoys it. I prefer quick witted humour.

To be honest, I think the English have you beat on this one!
Little Britain is a bit much for me, I'll admit. I haven't really watched much of it, but it makes me cringe a bit.

Na... sorry babe.
Our jokes are harsh enough to cut through flesh to hit bone & nerve.
Even my British step dad gets internally distraught when we all get on a roll& he came here before I was born.

Go to an English pub in the evenings. English people even horrify themselves when they've had a drink!

Re: It's a girl!
To be honest I think there's a line, beyond which a joke ceases to be funny & just relies on the shock factor to make people laugh - and they laugh because they are expected to, not because the joke is funny.

Re: It's a girl!
I think it depends on your sense of humour. Personally, I'm not a fan of the shock-value humour either. It's quite a huge part of the famous-comedian ring over here, though. Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Lee Evans, Jimmy Carr - I can't stand any of them, but they're very big on shock-value humour and are also very popular. Russell Brand and Jimmy Carr, in particular, have come out with some really outrageous stuff that's gotten them into trouble in the past.
But let's face it: "Why did the chicken cross the road?" isn't particularly funny in itself, and people still laugh at it because it's a classic.
Ignoring the shock-value stuff, I've not met a fellow Brit yet who hasn't mastered the art of sarcasm and irony! I agree, though, that there's a fine line between funny and offensive, even if the line does differ between each person.

Re: It's a girl!
What I really hate is when someone says something that's not particularly funny in itself, but they include what many of us still consider as offensive words - and the audience wets itself laughing. "OOO he said a naughty word !" It just encourages them to continue - if naughty words were that funny we'd all be killing ourselves laughing every day in the street or outside the junior school at home time.
I also hate jokes aimed at people with physical or mental disabilities, or who have experienced some misfortune not their fault. It's pathetic and stems from a basic fear within the joke-teller (and those that find it funny).

Re: It's a girl!
I dont enjoy either nasty or mean comedy thats meant to be either. However, some comedians with down syndrome, epilepsy, metal health issues etc. Are very funny as they pick on their own life challenges. They see that be you able bodied, minded or not, we can all laugh at things that happen to us all. Should I not tell & laugh at myself for falling in the street to someone in a wheelchair? I'm sure they'd laugh right at me. Disguised insults are different to people just laughing at life.
As for Russell Brand..... he is just crass, an arrogant fool. He is not funny. & Ricky Gervais is a moron who laughs in forced mode at himself.
