Some native breeds’ numbers rise despite overall eight per cent fall

KENNEL CLUB registrations for the first quarter of 2015 are eight per cent down on the same period last year, 45,668 as against 49,687 for January to June 2014.
All seven groups show a decline: hounds 2,939 (compared with 3,115 for the first three months of 2014), gundogs 15,995 (17,268), terriers 4,485 (5,080), utility 9,319 (9,440), working 3,243 (4,131), pastoral 3,223 (3,727) and toys 6,464 (6,926).
Among the ‘vulnerable’ native breeds, 118 Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies were registered, a 42 per cent increase from the same period last year.
Other native breeds faring better, the KC said, include the Smooth Collie, which saw 24 registrations – an increase of 167 per cent on the same period last year; the Lakeland Terrier, which increased by 117 per cent to 52; and the Manchester Terrier which increased by 92 per cent to 46.
Other native breeds to increase are the Clumber Spaniel, Deerhound, Otterhound, Irish Water Spaniel, King Charles Spaniel, Sealyham Terrier, Mastiff, Norwich Terrier and the English Toy Terrier.
“We are delighted to see that the Pembroke is among the native vulnerable breeds to increase so far this year,” said KC secretary Caroline Kisko.
Historic
“The breeds on this list are some of our oldest and most historic and we need to protect and promote them to responsible buyers and breeders of the future.
“With the sustained efforts of breed enthusiasts and support from the KC we hope we can continue to raise awareness of these breeds and challenge people to think beyond the obvious when making a choice about the breed they want to own.”
The Australian Terrier, Mexican Hairless (Standard) and the Swedish Vallhund experienced the biggest increases at 1,000, 250 and 240 per cent respectively.
Among more populous breeds – those with 120 or more registrations quarterly – the biggest riser was the Hungarian Vizsla which increased by 39 per cent to 429 registrations. The French Bulldog continues its astronomical rise with a further 24 per cent increase so far in 2015, followed by the Boston Terrier, at 15 per cent and the Pug and Maltese at 14 per cent.

Interesting, thank you.
It would be very sad if some native breeds died out through lack of a diverse gene pool to prevent in-breeding.

That's interesting - as Lynda says, the narrowing of the gene pool is a problem

The one that would seriously concern me is the Smooth Collie - a beautiful breed, but with so few registrations the gene pool must be very, very small. The good thing is that it is popular in other countries and so unrelated frozen semen could be the answer.
