Another RSPCA bungle
The dogs were all in very poor condition & were being kept in unsuitable habitats.
RSPCA returns all dogs but one to Dachshund breeder
DACHSHUND breeder Margaret Jamieson (Djeata) has had all but one of her dogs returned.
The outstanding one, a Miniature Smooth Dachshund, is believed to still be with her foster carer.
Twenty-five dogs were seized when the RSPCA raided her and her husband Richard Abraham’s property in Heighington, near Darlington, nearly a year ago.
Subsequently, charges were brought against the pair, which they denied, but the trial collapsed last week when the RSPCA withdrew its case.
Foster homes
It had emerged that the RSPCA had logged 26 dogs not the actual 25, and that veterinary documents had not been included in the charity’s evidence.
The dogs – Dachshunds, a Welsh Springer, a German Shorthaired Pointer and a lurcher, eight of whom were in temporary foster homes found by the RSPCA – were brought back on Friday of last week, but one Miniature Smooth Dachshund is believed still to be with her fosterer.
Another Dachshund, who has been returned, was only a few weeks old when she was seized and has been in a foster home for eight months.
"They were brought back in three vans and more medication than I care to see,” said Mrs Jamieson. "Some of the older ones are disoriented, especially the 15-year-old lurcher, and a 13-year-old who’s blind is very stressed.
"There is only one dog who hasn’t come back, a little red Mini Smooth Chilli. I’m waiting to hear whether the lady involved is going to bring her back. She’s done a little bit of winning – although she hasn’t been to a championship show – and I might have a litter of puppies from her. I’ve only had eight puppies since 2008 so I’m no puppy farmer and she was one of the eight.
"I don’t think the foster carer wants to part with her but neither did the other people who were looking after the dogs. I said I could understand that some people were unhappy at having to return them. I did tell her to leave me her phone number and I would think about it.”
Mrs Jamieson said that after her dogs were seized she saw them all at two RSPCA centres every few weeks.
"I had no idea so many were being fostered,” she said. "They must have been brought to the centres for me to see.”
A 12-year-old Welsh Springer and an eight-and-a-half-year-old English Springer were put to sleep due to ill health while they were in the charity’s kennels.
An RSPCA spokesman confirmed that one dog had not been returned.
"We’re working on reuniting the dog with its owner,” she said.

It all looks ideal on the website, but I suppose looks can be deceiving.

Re: Another RSPCA bungle
In your opinion, was the bungle the fact that the RSPCA removed all the dogs, or the fact that they were returned to the owner?

Re: Another RSPCA bungle
Well, from what I remember when they were first taken, the dogs were in a terrible condition. One actually had to be pts because of an untreated illness.
So, no, I don't think they should have all been returned - some, maybe, but not all.
The RSPCA bungled their evidence, unfortunately. They listed 26 dogs instead of 25, and 'forgot' to include any veterinary reports with their evidence!

Re: Another RSPCA bungle
"forgetting" to include veterinary evidence is unforgivable bungling.

Inexcusable. This sort of thing shouldn't happen!

Absolutely agree. You'd think that they'd have someone on their staff who would realise that if you're going to bring a case against someone, you need to produce evidence. It's not nuclear physics after all.

Their solicitor should have been the one to tell them what was needed; I assume they used one.

Good point - so the public's money is being spent on a solicitor who doesn't know the basics of his/her job. Worser and worser
