Baby rabbit on the road - Page 3 Empty Baby rabbit on the road

Post by Hayley Mon May 26, 2014 7:55 pm

First topic message reminder :

Driving to the forest to walk the mutts and i saw a baby rabbit crawling across the road, so had to stop and pick it up. Poor thing has a big gash on the shoulder and a mark on the bum, and was clearly lifted by a buzzard. I got out and walked to it and it turned and ran towards me  broken heart brought it home and have put it in a cat carrier in a santa hat with some food and water, if its even old enough to have that. Called the wildlife centre but its closed now!

Don't think it will survive sad but keep fingers crossed for the little mite.

It looks like he's made that decision doesn't it  laughing

Hopefully the vet would be understanding that you didn't just go out and pick up a rabbit, you found an injured baby and have been doing a great job caring for him happy

Sometimes with these 'rescues' they're dehydrated and their blood thicker and sluggish and as soon as they're rehydrated any internal injuries start having affect as the blood thins out again.

Poor, poor baby!

Bunny perked up a little with a heat pad. Took 6cc milk (wiskas. won't drink the kitten formula!)

empathy  Oh Hayley, I'm so sorry! sad I know this might not be of much comfort to you, but you really have done such an amazing job and you've made the poor little guy very comfortable. Honestly, you should be so proud of yourself.

Fingers crossed that he pulls through!

Edit: That's great that he's perked up! I wouldn't even worry about trying to stay detached or anything - do whatever feels right to you.

Can't figure the formula out at all straight face how does anyone understand this.

1 part powder (g) to 3.5 parts water (ml) one scoop is 2.5g and 12 scoops to 105ml water makes 130ml of milk

I need 10ml!

Is there any way you can make it in bulk, and then refrigerate/freeze it in ice cube trays? happy You could halve the amounts easily enough to create 65ml or even quarter them for 32.5ml, but I'm not sure about any less than that!

Im lucky i have a friend who is a scientist!!! She broke it down for me, so 2.5g to 9ml water would make me just over 10ml of formula. But really do they need that to be so complicated lol

If he perks up more, i wonder is there anything i can do to check for brain damage? I dont know if he had seizures or just was too warm on the heat pad was stretching out full but stiff as a board...then another time was just wrigling and kicking non stop and drooping to the one side no matter what side i put him on. Now sitting normal.

D'oh! I read it as 1 scoop, instead of 12 scoops! Thought it looked weird! laughing

You can check for sight and sound, to judge how aware of his surroundings he is. happy The heat may have triggered the symptoms you described, but he should be fine, considering he's back to normal now.

Bloody things gonna give me an anxiety attack lol have a newfound respect for mothers.

He's good this morning, woke me up scuttling about. Has drank the milk I left in his bowl and just had 5cc from the bottle. Sleeping now on my knee.

He seems to be able to put the left ear up but not the right. But when I got him I thought his right ear was a bit funny anyway cause of the injury to the shoulder straight face

Wow, he's a little roller coaster ride, isn't he? Glad he's feeling better!

Could be that his little ear just isn't read to pop up yet, but it's possible that he suffered some damage to the cartilage. It shouldn't hold him back at all though! happy
