I wonder if it's about time that an example was made to show that leaving a dog in a car on a hot day is unacceptable? I know she received suspended sentence, but maybe a short spell in prison would have shown people that they can't get away with it?

I think the trouble is, people seem to be of the impression that cracking a window is fine. Ignorance is no excuse, but a lot of them genuinely don't realise what they're doing.

But by now they should do! There has been a huge amount of publicity about leaving dogs in cars on a warm day - there's no excuse.

Yes, they should do. But, as much as the law insists that ignorance is no excuse, sentences are often lighter if the culprit claims ignorance with something like this.
