My little meg has passed away.
She was fine last night. She came running as always for her seeds & vegies before I lock them up for the night.
I have no idea what happened? She was fine last night as we (the dogs & I) went to lock them up in the coup. Tyson did a normal head count... "all good... lock da door mum".
Con went to let them out this morn.... He came inside...babe, Megs dead." "What?" I ran to the pen, she had gone during the night. I have no idea why? She was not sick, no mites, (I disinfect every 2wks) she was not slowing or showing any illness.
R.I.P. Meg.
She was buried under our decorative windmill this morn with lavender &her beloved tomatoes.
I will miss her clucking at 400 decibels when she laid an egg. So happy to tell everyone.... look what I did! Can I have some rice now?
Chloe, Tyson & Meg. XXXX
I know people say .... its just a chicken but, she was my beloved chook. She ran to me when I called, chook, chook, chook... played with my dogs, she ran in my house if I left the door open looking for dry dog food, she even sat in on bbqs with us & loitered incase a scrap dropped. She was a beautiful chook to share my yrs with her.
Well she didnt sit in really, she jumps up to steal food actually. A gorgeous girl with so much personality.

I am so glad you came to live in my yard with us & not in a cage.

No such thing as 'just a chook', she was yours and she relied on you, and you invested time and emotions into her. RIP Meg, hugs for you Tracy.

Re: My little meg has passed away.
Thanks guys.
I saved her from a battery farm, ( the same for Chloe & Alice) Disgusting conditions, ground beaks, none of them could stand on anything but wire for near 2 wks. They were "drunk" chooks that just fell over.
They all learnt & love to play in the sun, play with my dogs, run in the rain & search for bugs in the yard. How they love when I clean out the drive drain. Full of wet leaves & worms. They love to scratch & eat their finds. Meg loved to find a cockroach.. she would chase it, bang it on the concrete to kill it & gobble it up in about 3 secs.
She & Chloe are always in my way when I garden looking for something from the earth to steal & eat.
I will miss her everyday.
You're right Lorraine.... there is no such thing as "just" a chook, ferret, snake, mouse, dog, cat etc. They can all be loved family members.

Re: My little meg has passed away.
My boss (well, his daughter, really) rescued 6 chooks from battery.
They all lived wonderful lives even though they didn't live very long (only about 2 years). It was lovely seeing them peck around & fluff their feathers.

So sorry for you Tracy, of course you will mourn
But you rescued her from hell and gave her a wonderful life, and she went peacefully which is the most any of us could hope for. RIP Meg

Re: My little meg has passed away.
Thank you all.
I got them all about 5yrs ago? & its so lovely to sit in the yard with them pecking around. Meg loved a dirt bath. She would roll around in the dirt, flap her wings & scratch her head in the dirt & when she was done she would hold her wings out to let the sun warm her.
It was beautiful to see where she'd come from to how she bloomed with nothing more than a little love, attention & a variety of food.

Re: My little meg has passed away.
Tracy, I looked up life expectancy of domestic hens. Seems the natural life span of a chook is 7 years, less for a battery hen. As you had Meg for 5 years or so my guess is that she just died of old age. And who could ask for more, especially as you gave her such a wonderful life.

Thank you Lynda. That actually made me feel alittle bit better. What a nice thing to check for me. Thank you so much.
Just she didn't seem to be old or slowing down. I knew all of their times were coming but I just didn't see any signs. Now I am watching Chloe & Alice like a hawk. They were about the same age as I got all 3 at once.
