Dog chases other dogs.
I've tried posting in yahoo answers to get help with this and many people have just been rude and haven't read my situation.
I have a collie cross husky. And as I said on the other answer page I know he's a very demanding dog due to the breeds in him. He is 11 months old and we've never had a problem with him, he's such a wonderful puppy and is fantastic when it comes to obedience. He will follow what we say first time and if not first time second time. Very very very rarely do we have to ask more than twice.
He knows all the main commands and quite a few others.
But ever since we've had him we've tried to stop him yanking after other dogs when on walks. Whilst out on a run today he snapped his lead from trying to chase a cat. It was a very thick and strong lead.
He has a harness for walks as he walks better with a harness.
We trust him off the lead as he will never walk too far from us. But again when he sees another dog he'll go and run over to it to play. But because he is so playful and big it makes other dogs quite timid.
We've tried distracting him by getting him to sit or lay down or get him to chase a stick when there's another dog. He'll listen to us and obey but gets distracted by the dog too quickly.
He's very stimulated both physically and mentally.
On average he gets walked and out on runs around 20-30 miles a day. So he isn't lacking physical stimulation. And with mentally we're always finding new games to train him with and play with him. And he's socialised with other dogs as he's constantly out with my parents dogs
Can anyone give any guidance on the chasing other dogs please? Thank you

Hi there. Please come and introduce yourself here...
https://allbreedsdogforum.forumotion.co.uk/f31-introductions
Yes, it was me who answered on yahooanswers - mostly they were just being rude!
What have you tried with the distracting? What I would do is start at home by holding a treat in front of your face & say "Watch" (or whichever trigger word you want to use). The second he looks at the treat, praise him, say the trigger word again, and treat. You'll need to do this quite a few times until he automatically looks at you when you say the word. Then, just treat every other time and gradually reduce the treats as he gets better at it.
Then you can go outside & try it with distractions. Firstly, without dogs around, then with a dog waaaay in the distance & so on.
In the meantime, invest in a good quality long traing lead - you can get a 50' one on ebay really quite cheaply. Let it trail, but keep the end always in reach. Don't automatically grab it when you see a dog, but give him a chance to respond to you first.
At all times, though, try to stay positive & cheerful (even if you don't feel it!).

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
Well, the people on Yahoo Answers were obviously being very unfair to you - from what you've said, you sound like a very responsible owner. You've done everything an owner is expected to do!
I think the trouble is that, as you said, you've got a very high maintenance dog on your hands due to the breeds! Huskies are known to be very strong-willed; this trait was encouraged, as a sled dog needs to have drive and determination. Collies are herders, so you also have that to deal with. Honestly, your dog sounds like exactly what I would expect for a young Husky-Collie cross breed. So please don't think that there's something wrong with him!
I agree with the advice given above. Training leads are excellent for recall - your boy will have the freedom to roam around, but you can still reel him back in if he sees another dog or a cat. You could also try experimenting with different toys and treats - which ones does he like best?
Also, if you use a toy as a distraction, make sure he only sees this toy during walks, not at home. That way, he shouldn't get bored or too used to it! It'll be more of a novelty when you bring it out on walks as a distraction.

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
Thank you ever so much! From the moment we had him we wanted to train him so he was spot on from the start and now he just loves to learn new things.
Oh they were awfully rude and belittling. Telling me I shouldn't have a dog when pregnant and shouldn't have a dog at all as he will be aggressive to baby as he isn't trained. It was ridiculous.
We have just ordered that 50' lead you spoke of on eBay now. We're going to have to pick up another tomorrow as he snapped the leash we have from the handle from pulling Anthony (my partner) so hard.
Out on walks he won't get distracted by a toy or treats it's sticks he can't get enough of on walks. So I guess you could say that's his novelty toy on a walk? It's the first thing he looks for when we leave the house.
I'll start with the watch command tomorrow.
Thank you for your advice and if you have anymore if would be deeply appreciated

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
I hate to say it, but some of the people on Yahoo Answers can be a little sheltered. In an ideal world, pregnancy and dog-ownership will never clash. But this isn't an ideal world! Just because a dog is being a bit of a handful, doesn't mean that it's impossible for a pregnant woman to keep him! Bounciness and hyperactivity isn't automatically going to lead to aggression either, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to that if I were you!
If his favourite toy is a stick, go for it! You might want to exercise a little caution when choosing one, as small or particularly sharp sticks may injure the mouth.
Good luck! Please feel free to ask if you have any questions! We're more than happy to help

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
If you want a good, strong lead, you won't do too badly with one of these...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=police+style+dog+lead&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xpolice+style+dog+lead+softex&_nkw=police+style+dog+lead+softex&_sacat=0
I have two of these, I've had them for a couple of years & they've never snapped or frayed, and that's with an unpredictable Bull Terrier on the other end!
Also, if he's the type to shred sticks (ours does!), you might be interested in these...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kong-Safestix-70cm-Large-Dog-Safe-Stick-Throw-Toy-/251305674590?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Kitchen_Steamers_Cookers_PP&var=&hash=item3a82fc475e#ht_1911wt_722
I know they're a funny shape, but they throw well, and they're pretty tough!

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
I could never get rid of a dog because I found out I was pregnant. To me it's like having a dog then for the sake of it and not having one to be apart of your family.
I have no doubt that he'll be fine with the baby as he's been brought up around our two nieces and nephew who are all under one.
He has become a little menace especially over the last few weeks but to me it's to be expected due to my hormones. But he isn't being naughty he just wants to cuddle me rather than lay in his bed or go to his bed when we are eating lol.
We just don't want his hyper puppy ness to anger other dogs. If you get me?
Oh if we chose a small stick he'll look at it as if to say 'really guys?' And he'll find himself a nice fat big stick. He does try his best to pick one up too big for his mouth. It can be very entertaining on times.
Thank you and I will be sure to as you've been a great help xx

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
Good for you! I agree that a dog should be treated as a family member, rather than a throwaway object.
Bless him - he could be responding to your hormones They can get in strange little cuddly moods when they sense something's different!
I do understand what you mean. Some dogs don't particularly like other dogs jumping on them, but the long training lead should stop that until he's calmed down/had learned the 'watch me' command!
Bless him! He knows what he wants! Sounds a lot like our dog!
I'm really glad we could help! Feel free to post pics of your dog!

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
My last dog was about 8 years old when I had my first child. I was also told that I should get rid of him (staffordshire bull terrier), even my own mum said I shouldn't keep him. But he was perfect! My two children learned to stand by grabbing his scruff & pulling themselves up. I'd tell them off, of course, but Bandit would just look at me with that soft look as if to say "Don't shout at them, they're only babies!".
I'm sure that if he's introduced to the baby gently and is given lots of attention, he'll be superb!
Please do have a look around the forum, feel free to join in the game threads if you want, and please let us see some pics of you lovely dog!
P.S. Good luck!

Re: Dog chases other dogs.
Most probably. He's my little hero after helping me when I fell down the stairs. He crawled under me supported my weight when I was doubled over at the bottom but he was so careful not to get bump or my boobs. Held me there then slowly raised me and nudged me to the sofa and brought my bottle of water from the table.
I know everyone says this but he truly is the most amazing dog when it comes to love and wanting you to be proud of him.
He very much knows what he want lol. If you're trying to sleep on the sofa and he wants to play ball. You'll end up playing ball lol. Or coming to sleep with you lol
How do I post pictures?

Awww, how sweet! What a good dog!
They do seem to have an extra sense, though, when it comes to pregnancy. I suppose they can sense the extra hormones or something?

Probably is the hormones they sense and feel like they've gotta be big brother or big sister
I was very proud of him, it made my partner cry as he was in work when it happened. Mylo now won't let me up stairs on my own.
He really is but thankfully he knows when enough is enough. Or I'd be moaning how hyper he was lol.
Thank you I shall have a look shortly !!
Thanks guys !!

It truly was amazing LyndaW. Considering he's never witnessed that situation or never been trained on how to act in that situation. It was amazing.
I haven't a clue what id do without my dog, we taught him to fetch socks and all sorts. He just loves to learn. Luckily there is thousands of tricks out there so we'll always have something to teach him lol. It'll be fetching nappies soon.
Dogs' instincts are excellent

Haha, oh he is thick too, just has intelligent spurts lol. Forever miss judging the door and running into the wall, silly dogs are hilarious. Dogs provide endless amount of entertainment.
My parents have to spaniels that have just turned one and they are cracking, they're so daft.

Aww! Even the smart ones have their silly moments!
Ours is a Bull Terrier. He's a little clown, bless him One time, he was trotting along in the house in broad daylight and he walked straight into a cabinet! Shook himself, took a little side step, and walked past it looking confused.
