OMG - a lump in my throat as big as a brick.
As for it being "lucky" that the vet scanned him for a microchip, I would hope that all vets in all rescues do this as a matter of course.

seen 2 or 3 of these stories recently , a big plus for microchipping , good find Caryll and a lovely looking boy just a shame they have missed out on 10 years of his life

It does sometimes make you wonder? Especially if (as in this case) the dog is elderly & not likely to be rehomed.

He is indeed a lovely looking boy. He's had a rough time by the sound of it, but he's home now, thank god!

Yes I wonder too, Caryll. A microchip is only of use if it is scanned for.

I'd genuinely like to think, though, that all rescue centres/pounds would routinely scan - if they don't have their own scanner (which many do, nowadays), then have a deal with their local vets to do a scan. I'm sure most vets would oblige, free of charge!

I'm hoping that's the case as well, Caryll. The "luckily" might just be a case of journalistic exuberance.

Yes, hopefully that's the case. Journalists aren't known for their accuracy!
