In my opinion, that's what Dobes should look like! Not too exaggerated, smooth lines, reasonable length of neck.

So glad you agree! Of course, I can't take any credit at all for their breeding, but they were champion-bred and came from a top breeder of the time who resisted the then growing trend for giraffe necks. and they both had fantastic temperaments.

Thank you! That was a lot down to me. My vet was staggered by them and full of awe by their shiny coats "you can see your face in them" he said. He remembers these dogs to this day - "vividly", he said.
I won't tell you what they were fed on cos you'll be horrified, but they didn't do too badly on it did they.

No, they didn't! Goes to show what good breeding and meticulous love and care will do for a dog!
It's sad, but a lot of Dobes I see now are all dull, with fur shedding by the bucket load. A shiny dog is a healthy dog!

Yes, it's strange. There are a couple of dobes round here & they have quite dull coats & long skinny necks with a tiny head on top!
The dog in the sixth picture is a beauty!

Yes, they do. When you stroke them, hair falls out all over the place. Their necks are far too long!
Can't get over these pictures! They look so powerful, and yet they have really gentle expressions.

Re: Some very bad pics of my Dobermanns
I am so glad you like them; thank you once again.
I am so sad to hear that the recent Dobe specimens you have encountered are in such poor shape. I very rarely come across a Dobermann these days, which might be just as well as I may burst into tears.
The 6th picture was of my first Dobe, Zeta. She was by Ch. Studbriar The Red out of Studbriar The Geisha Gal and was line bred to a certain extent - as far as I can remember the Grandfather or G Grandfather were the same dog. This was Good Thing in those days. Zeta is also in Pic. 1 (aged 5 months), and pic.4.

Tbh, I think a lot of it with the ones we see is probably just less than adequate care.
Zeta's gorgeous! Stunning girl!
How did you keep them looking so healthy? The coats, for instance.

Maybe just good breeding, Eleanor! I used to wash them every so often and groom with a hound glove. Wipe over with a silky cloth for shows.

Re: Some very bad pics of my Dobermanns
I tend to find that happier dogs tend to have shiner/healthier coats. That's not to say that a dull coat means that the dog's unhappy, of course.
A part of the problem with the Dobes mentioned earlier, I think, is probably that they've never seen a piece of grooming equipment in their lives!

Re: Some very bad pics of my Dobermanns
Thank you Dave.
I love the sleeping pup photo too Caroline, that was Rio - my second Dobie and my "dog in a million". She never put a paw wrong. My daughter used to work after hours at college at a supermarket to earn extra dosh, came home one evening and collapsed exhausted on the sofa and Rio cuddled up to her. The pic was taken on a throwaway camera which is why it is poor quality.
