This is awful....
...an indictment on our society today. I know I would have helped (I've done so in the past) but the fact that everybody just avoids even looking at this man is disgusting.

I just read an article that says if something happens to you don't just yell, yell at someone specific. If there's only one or two people they will help you but if there's a crowd everyone will keep moving assuming someone else will help.
You should say for example: Hey you in the blue sweater help me. Make it their responsibility.
I also help people.

I think the problem here, though, was the way the man was dressed initially. When he did exactly the same thing dressed in a suit & tie, people were falling over themselves to help!

Yes I'm afraid it was all down to appearance. In any large town or city there will be drunks and druggies, and they tend to look like the first man. You will very rarely find a man in a business suit lying down in a drunken or drugged state.
I'd like to think I'd stop to help the first man, but I can't say for sure that I would. Drunks/druggies can be violent if disturbed, or it may be a ploy to mug you.
Sorry!

No need to apologise!
I can't walk by someone who's just collapsed in the road. Once, years ago, I was going home with my oh (boyfriend, then) when I saw a drunk man stagger & fall, hitting his head on a wall on the way down. I made my oh stop, go back & give the man a lift home!
A few weeks ago I was out with Dempsey on his last walk of the night (around midnight, I think it was), when I saw someone lying in the road. He was just a lad, a year or two younger than my own son, & obviously drunk as a skunk. I knocked on a neighbour's door & asked them to call an ambulance & I waited with the lad until they had arrived.
I just can't walk past.
