Interesting. Not quite sure that I believe the legend itself, as people very often created these mythical beasts as a way to explain what they didn't understand in those times. I'm curious about this seven foot canine skeleton they've found, though! Wondering if somebody's planted the skeleton there as a hoax, or if there was a root to the legend in the form of a particularly large, aggressive dog.

Yes, I'm thinking more along the lines of a big dog! Let's face it, there are dogs around today that can top 7 feet when they stand on their hind legs!

I know, but I suppose back in the 1500s they were still terribly superstitious & related every bad thing to hell & damnation!

Being born and brought up in a small village in the north of Essex, close to the Suffolk border, I heard of the Black Shuck as a child. I didn't know the rampaging through the church story, what I heard was the Black Shuck roamed the lonely places and if any person happened to see him they could be sure that they would die. The legend lived longer than a dog ever would.

How strange though that a giant dog's skeleton has been found buried on holy land. Surely no other animals would have been buried in sanctified ground.

A fascinating discovery.

Ah, but was it buried, or did it just die there & maybe get covered in vegetation over the hundreds of years?

The bones look quite recent. I think someone just buried their dog there a few years ago and now everyones gone loopy.
I do like these stories and conspiracy theories myself.

I think living in the old times would have been terribly interesting. Witches and demons and ghosts etc. Exciting!
