Re: Interesting study on forum trolling
Have to admit, I've trolled before! At my old forum, we made a lot of enemies, so...
However, there is a great difference between 'fun' trolling and malicious trolling. I, for one, would never do it to hurt somebody in any way.
I've actually been a victim of a nasty stalker-troll, though I still found it funny! Guy really got into it, looking up personal details and the like. He came to the conclusion that I was a man, born into a woman's body.

Seriously, though, trolling is quite easy to spot, but not always easy to ignore, which is what should happen!

I've read an interesting article on what personality disorders the internet has brought about. I'll try and find it later.
And I've been there too - the cyber stalker. He didn't have multiple victims and could focus on trying to drive me as batshit insane as he claimed I was.

It can actually be quite scary, even if you know they can't get to you physically.
There are some weird people out there.

Pretty sure I know exactly which one you mean, Theresa!
I consider myself lucky, as my last forum actually hardened me a lot. It had its flaws - unending drama, in-fighting, etc., but everybody just said what they had to say. There was no room for hurt feelings. When dealing with a troll, I find that, depending on how they're approaching you, it's best to either ignore them completely or troll them back.

Unfortunately there are times when you get dragged into a debate before you actually realise they're trolls!
Very irritating indeed!

The troll I was dealing with was sort of half-trolling, half serious. He hated me.
At the beginning, he was convinced that I was in a relationship with another of the admins on the forum, so we played along and trolled him back. Sort of back fired though, as our forum members also ended up believing it!

I love a good troll as long as it doesn't get too personal of abusive. A group of us got fed up with a horse forum and all decided to flood it with qu about horses like "if I buy a foal can it live in my bedroom without my mum knowing" and "I've just fed my horse steak and he loved it, is he a vampire?"
