Teaching your dog to be calm
A while ago I read an article about teaching your dog to be calm vs exercise (can't find it for the life of me).
Many people exercise their hyper dog tired but can't get the problem behaviour to stop. A hyper dog is only tired for a while and then you have to exercise him/her again. The hyper behaviour feeds itself.
I did find this: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=1574
Some very good pointers.
