Name: Kevin
Age: 3 years-old
Breed: Lurcher
Can I live with Children: Yes – over 7 years of age probably best due to his size
Can I live with cats:No
Can I live with other dogs: Possibly, with careful introduction
Fostered In: South Wales
Other Information
Gentle Kevin is truly a heart-stealing wonder dog and in South Wales. He has a back story that would make you weep. This 3–year-old lurcher has had the saddest start to his life. Starved, abused and abandoned Kevin was in a critical condition when he was found alone and injured on the street. Friends of the Animals RCT took Kevin into their care and gave him all of the help he needed to get better. When found Kevin was so emaciated every bone in his weak little body was visible and he had a horrific head injury.
Kevin is completely untainted by the terrible cruelty he has experienced. He can be bossy with new dogs so it would be best if he were homed as an only dog but with careful introduction he may be able to live with another dog – but not a very small one. Kevin hasn’t met any cats in his foster home so out of caution we will not home him with any.
This extremely affectionate lad probably weighs about 30kg and measures 27-inches to the shoulder but he thinks he is a lap dog. Sit on your sofa and he will try to get up for a cuddle. If you are sitting at the computer or doing something else he will nestle his head on your lap or nuzzle his nose under your arm until you fuss him – then when you stop fussing him he will gently paw you until you start again.
When he wants to go for a walk he gets all excited, bounces a little and his teeth chatter in that way that greyhounds have. He loves to be touched, loves an ear rub, gentle head stroke and is happy to have his paws cleaned after going out for a walk.
He is a cautious boy, but also very trusting and playful. He is very noble and sedate looking but that hides his fun streak. His doggie manners, are coming along nicely – he understands “sit” (especially if there is food involved), is getting to understand “no” and “bed”. He would benefit from further basic training.
On the lead, Kevin will plod along very gently with a slack lead but when he is in a rush he does pull and is very strong. He is interested in other dogs when he is out walking but is not keen on eager dogs who bowl up to him.
Kevin doesn't like to be left and will howl and bark so will need time and help to overcome his fears. With this in mind he would prefer his family to be around for most of the day.
He hasn’t shown any destructive or dominant tendencies in his current foster home. He travels well but struggles to jump into the hatchback boot area of a car. Once in, he settles down and goes to sleep – only popping his head up occasionally to see what is going on.
Kevin is looking for a home with experience of sight-hounds as they will understand the traits of the breed. He needs someone who is home for at least half the day so that he gets the company and the comfy sofa that he craves. He loves everyone and is very gentle with children (he will just stand still while they fuss him) but we would advise that any children in his new home are over 7 years.
Kevin is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Potential adopters are expected to travel to meet Kevin in his foster home in South Wales.
