Baby rabbit on the road - Page 5 Empty Baby rabbit on the road

Post by Hayley Mon May 26, 2014 7:55 pm

First topic message reminder :

Driving to the forest to walk the mutts and i saw a baby rabbit crawling across the road, so had to stop and pick it up. Poor thing has a big gash on the shoulder and a mark on the bum, and was clearly lifted by a buzzard. I got out and walked to it and it turned and ran towards me  broken heart brought it home and have put it in a cat carrier in a santa hat with some food and water, if its even old enough to have that. Called the wildlife centre but its closed now!

Don't think it will survive sad but keep fingers crossed for the little mite.

Weight before feeding was 132 an 136 after. Not happy about this! Can't add more feeds or he will bloat sad might need to try and encourage him to drink milk from the bowl when he fancies.

I do think a vet trip is a good idea. 136g is quite a heavy weight for a young rabbit. At roughly 120g, rabbits are ready to go out on their own and find their own food. Could be that the little guy has worms, which might be adding on those extra grams. happy

Bunny in with vet who seems really nice. Didn't ask too many qu lol

Going to try and clip the hair back and see what's really there cause my own clippers aren't small enough. Soon as the vet picked up it did a huuuuuuuge pee lol but it's very calm and nose is twitching.

Glad the vet's okay with him! Hopefully will be able to tell you whether or not the little guy is a little guy or a little girl! laughing

Have found another injury that I couldn't get to. Was a pocket of puss that's now dried and he said he honestly doesn't know how it's survived. Wanted to keep it in but they have no milk and don't know the routine etc so I have to come back every day to get the wounds flushed and antibs. This will be costly >_<;;

That's a relief for you that the vet was ok with him happy
The vet being surprised that he's survived shows what a good job you've been doing with him and I agree with Eleanor, get his number wink

Won't they treat it free as it's wild?

Cost me £26, so not too bad. Sold a pair of sunglasses for that so its basically free :p

If i came out and said "its wild so do it free" they would have put him down without a doubt. The injuries are very bad and they wouldn't stress a wild rabbit that way. But he is so tame now, he just sat in the vets hand preening and cleaning and licking. I think the vet was quite taken lol

It may be wrong of me to be keeping him alive if he is wild, but he has fought so hard i think he deserves a chance.

Probably for the best then, if it means they'll treat him! Could be worse! happy Did you manage to find out the gender for sure?

Awww well done for helping the baby!!! I hand reared a litter of 5 wild bunnies once that got dug up accidentally. It was a very tiring time having to do night feeds too, and wiping their little bottoms with warm moist cotton wool to make them go to the loo! It's a lot of hard work, but definitely worth the effort! Well done! happy xxx

Getting a little peed off at a so called expert (on another forum). Nothing i do is right, the formula isn't the right one, the food isn't the best food, i should not be putting healing cream on, they told me it would need anti-b. End of the day this is a wild bunny i'm taking care of out of the goodness of my heart, i have other animals i have to care for and i got the stuff i could at the time!  tearing hair

Tell them to stop being an inconsiderate pig. Like you said, you've rescued a wild rabbit - this wasn't planned. When something like this happens, you make do with what you've got.

But maybe saving this little rabbit's life just isn't enough! You have to perform miracles as well, Hayley! wink

Sadly, yes! Some people let knowledge go to their head (excuse the pun) and think themselves better than others.

Hayley - a week on and Bunny is still in this world. What's more, he/she is thriving, happy, gaining weight (?), and the wounds are healing. Correct?

Plus you have the help of your dishy vet.

If all of the above is true, then you are doing a great job. What would your "expert" have you do?

Will get the vet to teach me how to flush out the wounds so i can do it more often. I'm just worried about bun getting stressed from getting wet but he seemed to handle getting dried with the hair dryer okay. Wonder how long injuries like that take to heal up

And here he is in the feeding box. Gonna try putting him in there inbetween milking times. Hes currently munching away on something, possibly cow parsley!
