Poor Dempsey :( Empty Poor Dempsey :(

Post by Eleanor Tue Jun 16, 2015 2:10 pm

He's really going through the wars. Went to the vets today to sort out his overgrown dewclaw (the one that grows too quickly and curls inwards), vaccinations and broken tooth. The claw and vaccinations were all sorted out with no problem, but the tooth is going to need extracting. sad So he's booked in for the procedure in four weeks.

He's also hurt his paw. We think it's an allergic reaction to a carpet cleaner we used in the living room last week, despite the fact that it was safe for pets. Just one of those unfortunate incidences. The skin between his digital and metacarpal pads has been very sore, weepy and itchy, and he's been licking it constantly. We noticed earlier today that a blister has appeared, so we put some coconut oil on his pads and wrapped it with vet wrap. He's feeling very sorry for himself!

The picture's a bit deceiving, as it looks like the wrap is wrapped too tightly around the top of his paw, but I promise it isn't! laughing I'm quite pleased with it, as I've finally been able to put some of the first aid skills I've learned into practice!

Poor Dempsey! He's being so good about your lovely neat paw dressing; Kuchar would have had that off in 2 seconds flat! I hope his paw recovers very soon hug

Be fair - I think he left it on for at least three hours! laughing It started to slip down a bit, though, so he was tugging at it. Every time he took a step, he'd shake his paw out to the side, so I took pity on him and took the wrapping off after a while. tongue

Seems to be better today. happy He's fast asleep and has barely licked it this morning!

Poor Demps.

Xan gets the same thing with his paw every once in a while but I think it's one of the weeds in the yard that he squishes while running.

Poor Xan!

Dempsey's paw is on the mend now, thank God! Though he also got a rash on his nose, which we wondering about. Not sure if it was the same thing, but I dumped a load of coconut oil on it just in case. laughing He wasn't very happy. "Nooo, you're missing my mouth! It's supposed to go inside my mouth!"

Oh Dempsey,  you poor babe. love ... But why do you have to wait 4 wks to have his tooth fixed? That's far too long. It's been bothering him for awhile now & I wouldn't wait one week if my tooth hurt me. He must be in pain. Why can't the vet see him this week?

He's not in any pain, Tracy. happy Luckily, it isn't a problem at the moment. It'll need removing because the missing enamel could leave the tooth exposed to infection. The vet could have scheduled him sooner, but he's terrified of the vets and needs to go back at the schedule time anyway so that he can get a lepto booster. It's better for Dempsey if he gets both done at the same time, rather than two separate visits to the vet. If there's any sign of discomfort or infection in the tooth, the extraction date will be moved forward. We discussed it all with the vet at the time, so there's no need for worry. happy

Yeah, it's a lot easier on the furbabies! He's getting better with the vets. He can walk all the way through their car park, around the side of the vet and into the garden at the front. He just doesn't like going inside! laughing

Dempsey says thanks for the concern! happy

I've been desensitising him over the last few months, but I think this will set him back a bit. Shame, but can't be helped.
