Demps is passing blood in his stools
Not an emergency case, as it's only a very small amount of watery, pale blood. Not digested, so it's from his lower digestive tract. We're almost certain that he's been chewing his bedding, so it's probably irritated his linings. He's been going to the toilet, eating properly, no lethargy, etc..
Seems like what ever it is he's eaten is currently in his rectum (or near it) and is just waiting to pass through. We're going to keep an eye on him. If he gets any worse, it'll be a vet trip. Probably the same case as last time though - he puts everything in his mouth.
I've thrown away some of his tattered bedding. In future, the first time we catch him chewing on any of it, the blanket will be taken away and replaced with a new one. Will also wash them regularly to get rid of any food traces.

He is! Almost all of it is due to him eating something he shouldn't have. Daft boy!

What is it about beds that are so enticing? Demps will lay there and suck the corners of his blankets after his dinner, until we catch him!

No idea harvey has never been bothered, but chance must rip all corners off and rip all seems open to properly destuff the bed!

Re: Demps is passing blood in his stools
I do hope that Dempsey recovers soon
My last Dobie, Rio, used to sleep on (or in!) my bed, and she would always bunch up a piece of duvet between her paws, open her jaws wide over the bunch and go to sleep. I used to think it was kinda cute and might have reminded her of being a tiny puppy, as she was only 6 weeks old when I got her. However, she did have subtle chew on it (so lucky it wasn't her Mum!) and when my duvet covers got to be more holes than duvet cover I had to replace them. I've got a blurry photo of her doing it somewhere, because it was so "Rio".

Re: Demps is passing blood in his stools
Strange dogs!
Thanks, Lynda, he's getting better. No more blood at all - just loose stools. He passed some logs earlier which obviously contained twisted up material, which is probably what was causing the irritation and diarrhoea. Might still have a bit more to pass through, but he's a lot better. He was never lethargic or in obvious pain, so that's a plus!

Good news - the diarrhoea would obviously bypass the "logs". Hopefully he has now got rid of all foreign material.

No, not as a general rule. Usually his bouts of stomach problems are caused by eating things he shouldn't, and almost always inorganic things. So as they go through his system they irritate his bowels. Once he passes the foreign object (generally material, but also foam earplugs, earphones and other nasty things) everything goes back to normal.
I tried to get some castor oil today to help ease the passage of such things, but Boots and Superdrug don't sell it any more!

Yes, I think the material was causing irritation in his lower intestines/rectum. This probably upset his digestive tract, causing the diarrhoea, which (as diarrhoea unfortunately does) caused the bleeding. Seems fine today!
Shisa wrote:Do you give him Probiotics?
Occasionally - if the diarrhoea or constipation doesn't settle within a couple of days, we sometimes give him some. The trouble is, because it's usually caused by him eating something bad rather than bacteria, the probiotics probably wouldn't help. Daft dog!

My mum had a Great Dane that ate anything he could steal. Socks, rope, his bed and once a dishtowel! My mum only noticed when she found it in his poop outside! We were lucky there was never a severe blockage.

Sounds like Dempsey! He's eaten socks, jumpers, bras, underwear, cushion covers, ear plugs, earphones, remote controls, stones, coal, toilet paper, a part of the inside of the car door, candles, my laptop charger, a long piece of ribbon, his bed and much more!

Re: Demps is passing blood in his stools
My mums cats are notorious charger cable chewers. You should see her chargers they're more tape than wire!
But yes Blade ate anything.
My Spike eats poop, it's disgusting! I have tried everything to stop or curb it to no avail. We think it's because he was basically dead when I got him and was so starved. I have no idea what he survived on till I got him.
