Post by Caryll Sun Jun 01, 2014 9:37 am

First topic message reminder :

Dempsey's Kool Collar arrived a couple of days ago but the weather was atrocious so we couldn't use it.

However, it is really warm today & I took Dempsey on his favourite walk over Bradlaugh Fields. He came back very hot indeed, so I thought I'd give his collar a try. Within about 1-2 minutes he had stopped panting and was lying very comfortably indeed, so very impressed!

A big  thumbs up

laughing I'm loving this conversation!

Tbh, I think the fuss in the UK is less about the actual temperature and more about the humidity. It gets very sticky and horrible. When we were in San Francisco and San Jose, the temperature was well into the 30s (Celsius, obviously!) and we were fine with it!

I have heard that you guys get terrible humidity. We have some and it makes you uncomfortable and unable to sleep.
If you want terrible, terrible humidity go to Bali end of monsoon season (end March, early April) 98% humidity in 30 + degrees. You sweat like a pig and it does not evaporate. You can literally wring the sweat out of your clothes and your bathing suit doesn't dry between dips.
Horrid!

Where I am, in melb, the humidity cant get quite high. It can be stifling at only 30c. But if you go to perth (western aust) even 40c does not seem as hot. They have a very dry heat.

We often get anywhere from 80-90% humidity, but thankfully not as bad as countries with monsoons! laughing The humidity here today is 56%, according to the weather forecast. On Tuesday, it's supposed to go up to 94% on Tuesday, 90-100% on Wednesday and 100% on Thursday!  worried

The mildest climate in the world, second to Hawaii

“"According to the Guinness Book of Records, Mossel Bay enjoys the mildest climate in the world, second only to Hawaii"” is what Mossel Bay Tourism (MBT) and ±550 other websites (Google Search) will tell you about the weather in Mosselbaai. Various editions of the book are also cited, but MBT has now refined the statement to the 1992 edition and “"a small town"” in Hawaii, as opposed to previously the whole chain of islands.

A search through various editions of the book, including the 1992 edition, has turned up naught regarding this claim. Also, the fact that most websites misspell the reference as the Guiness Book of Records makes one immediately suspect that they are just parroting a myth.

So, what town (or region) has the mildest climate in the world. And who’s second?

First, however, we need to define what we mean by the “mildest climate.” The Penguin Dictionary of Physical Geography defines climate as “"the average weather conditions at a specific place over a lengthy period of time (>30 years)".” The Reader’s Digest Universal Dictionary defines mild as “"having no extremes in temperature; temperate".” Thus, a mild climate is one where both summer and winter temperatures are close to 18°C. To calculate this, scientists use what is called heating degree days (HDD) and cooling degree days (CDD). The lower this number is calculated over a certain amount of time, usually one year, the more temperate the location. There is, however, two huge problems with this method, namely that temperatures measured at various stations across an area as big as Mossel Bay vary by two or three degrees for the same period, and that some studies deviate from the 18°C mild-point by allowing as much as a three degree variation (i.e. 15 to 21°C) to the zero point. Now for us South Africans a day temperature of 15°C is cold, whereas 24°C is just right.

It is quite moderate but even moderate can turn into hot and cold when you get used to it.
Nancy and Chris visited here 2/3 years ago in winter and they were swimming and fishing, walking around in shorts and flip flops while I had on jeans and a cardi.

In the Western Cape most of us have indoor bbq's. The weather can change so quickly and the wind often blows to strong for an outdoor braai.

Braai = barbie = barbeque
